Gingerbread and biscuits, fragrant ginger tea or tart ginger ale - you must admit it is so delicious! Ginger makes an excellent seasoning for a wide variety of dishes, and it is also widely used in folk medicine! So why not try to grow this wonderful plant in your country house, because it is quite possible to do it in our latitudes? The main thing is to know the basic rules for growing ginger, and then everything will definitely work out
How to plant ginger?
In order to grow ginger in your summer cottage, it is important to provide it with favorable conditions and proper care. This plant is usually propagated by dividing its powerful rhizomes, since it simply does not give seeds. It is best to purchase roots with a smooth glossy surface for subsequent division. In no case should they be frostbitten, devoid of shoot buds (that is, "eyes") or too dry.
The ideal time to plant ginger is from March to April. Before proceeding with the division of the roots, they are immersed in warm water for an hour or two - this is necessary in order to stimulate the kidneys for subsequent growth. Then the prepared roots are divided into several three-centimeter pieces, making sure that tiny buds remain on each piece. And then the roots are buried in the ground (buds up) to a depth of two or three centimeters and the beds are well watered. If the roots suddenly turned out to be not completely covered with soil, then the parts peeking out of the ground are slightly dried and sprinkled with ash or crushed activated carbon. In just a couple of weeks, you will be able to notice the appearance of the first ginger shoots!
It is best for residents of temperate climatic zones to grow ginger in greenhouses, since this Asian guest (and ginger came to us from distant South Asia) needs a sufficiently high air temperature and abundant moisture. As for the soil, ideally it should be loose and well fertilized, with little sand added. And so that the roots do not start to rot, you should definitely take care of creating a full-fledged drainage layer of crushed stone, sand or gravel (its thickness should be at least two centimeters)!
Useful Tips
In order for ginger to grow well and please with a wonderful harvest, it will not hurt to take on board a few useful tips. So, for planting roots, ideally, you should choose open sunny areas, however, direct "burning" sun rays should not fall on them. And the growing ginger must be protected by all means from strong gusts of wind.
The growing plant needs to be watered and sprayed often - it is better to do this little by little, but often, since ginger also does not like excessive waterlogging. And towards the end of September watering practically stops. You also need to loosen the soil regularly, ideally one centimeter deeper.
As for fertilizers, ginger responds very well to mullein feeding, and starting in July, it is recommended to alternate potash fertilizers with organic ones. Ideally, ginger is fed twice a week.
They start harvesting ginger only after it begins to dry out and shed its leaves - as a rule, this happens in the first half of autumn. However, there are also those who like to dig out young roots - they are characterized by a particularly delicate taste. All dug rhizomes must be thoroughly cleaned of the soil adhering to them, after which they are dried in the sun for several days. And they store the dug roots either in the basement or in the refrigerator.
And do not be surprised or even more upset if the ginger roots grown with your own hands turn out to be less imported - for a colder climate this is quite normal! Most importantly, we managed to grow ginger!
