Most of the plants that have to shed their leaves in the winter love to grow in sunny places in order to maximize the absorption of solar energy for the successful continuation of life on Earth. Therefore, it is often difficult to find plants for shady areas of the garden. Rogersia can help gardeners as it feels great both in the sun and in deep shade
What's in your name
Not only the plants of the American tropics were famous for their restless character, gradually migrating to Europe. Many amazingly beautiful plants were born in East Asia, later moving to America and Europe. One of these plants is
Rogersia, in the name of which the name of the American admiral with the same name is immortalized, who brought a new plant to America instead of war trophies.
Russian travelers and botanists, to whom we today owe this magnificent plant, did not lag behind the American admiral. Thus, the Russian ethnographer Grigory Nikolaevich Potanin (1835-04-10 - 1920-30-06), a man with an amazing destiny, brought from China a collection of plants, among which was Rogersia horse chestnut. And the Russian botanist, Karl Ivanovich Maksimovich (11 (23).11.1827 - 04 (16).02.1891), brought Rogersia hundred-leafed from Japan.
Habit
Complex beautiful leaves, located on strong long petioles, rough to the touch, with well-defined veins, creating the effect of leaf convexity. The petiole with leaves creates a decorative picture up to a meter long and half a meter wide.
The leaves are arranged differently in different species. In some, they resemble the powerful feathers of a bird, in others, holding on to the end of the petiole, they diverge to the sides, like a Japanese fan.
The stems become even longer when inflorescences appear on their tops, painted in white, pinkish or emerald green with a reddish tint.
At the end of October, moreover, this does not happen every year, dust-like seeds ripen, which slowly germinate in uncooked rows of shoots, even if they are very carefully watered.
Varieties
* Rogersia horse chestnut (Rodgersia aesculifolia) - the leaves of this species are fanned out at the end of the petiole and are first painted in a bronze-brown color, which gradually turns green. Inflorescences are long, delicate, white or pinkish.
* Rogersia stoolisty (Rodgersia podophylla) - everything described above is characteristic of this species, only the shape of the leaves resembles large piles for grape wine. Flowering begins in late June.
* Rogers feathery (Rodgersia pinnata) - with leaves that look like the feathers of a magic bird.
* Rogersia Elderberry (Rodgersia sambucifolia) - the very last to bloom, showing the world emerald green inflorescences with a reddish tint.
Growing
In nature, perennial Rogersia grows along mountain rivers running through the mountainous regions of China, Japan, Nepal, Burma, and Korea. In our country, in the 19th century, she took root in the Imperial Botanical Garden of St. Petersburg, from where she continued the procession throughout the country.
The plant is frost-resistant. The first leaves usually appear after late frosts, if the plant is located in the shade, but if the frost manages to damage the young leaves, they are able to recover. True, in this case, the plant may not please with its flowering this year.
Their tolerance for any soil makes the plant a welcome member of any flower garden. Only they do not like very dry soil, but they are also afraid of excess moisture or stagnant water.
Rogers does not require any maintenance at all. But when feeding the plant with full mineral fertilizer during planting or at the beginning of the growing season, as well as with sufficiently moist soil, the leaves of Rogersia will delight in their size and beauty. Moisture can be provided by planting a plant near a reservoir.
Rogers can grow in one place for many years. Propagated by dividing the bush.
