Most plants like sunny places. But any garden has shady areas, so they cannot remain without vegetation. In such cases, the Lamb comes to the rescue, unpretentious to the soil, preferring shade and partial shade, resistant to frost and attracting helpers in plant care - bees
Rod Lamb
The genus Lamium is a friendly community of perennial and annual herbaceous plants, numbering more than forty species that are resistant to any temperature and do not require close attention of the grower.
They can be found in the shady forests of our country, where they grow beautifully on any soil, sometimes making their way into gardens and vegetable gardens in the form of weeds.
A branching stem with dark green toothed leaves likes to creep along the surface of the earth, clinging to the soil with additional roots. A silvery trace stretches along the central vein of the leaves. In false whorls (a knot on the stem, on which more than three plant organs are located) or in the axils of the upper leaves, purple, pink or white double-lipped flowers appear in spring.
Varieties
In decorative plantings, the following types are used:
•
White lamb (Lamium album) - they call it “
Deaf nettle . But, unlike nettle, lamb leaves will not burn your hand when touched. It is widely distributed in the wild, blooming in spring with two-lipped white flowers. Bushes 20-30 centimeters high hide in the shade of trees and bushes.
•
Lamb spotted or speckled (Lamium maculatum) - somewhere the lamb is classified as a weed, somewhere it is grown as an ornamental and melliferous plant. A low-growing plant (15 to 30 cm tall) has leaves covered with silvery specks or spots, which gave it its name. Soups are made from young leaves. Purple-pink flowers appear on bushes in spring. Their two-lipped shape underlines the name by placing a spotted pattern on the lower lip of the corolla.
•
Lamb zelenchuk (Lamium galeobdolon) - a low-growing plant (from 15 to 30 cm in height) blooms in spring and summer with yellow flowers, for which in some areas it is called"
Yellow lamb . Flowers form groups of 3-10 in the axils of toothed ovate ornamental leaves.
•
Lamb purple or purple (Lamium purpureum) - beautiful heart-shaped leaves are located opposite on a tetrahedral thirty-centimeter erect stem. In the axils of the leaves, pink-purple two-lipped flowers are born in spring. Traditional medicine does not bypass the purple neat.
Growing
Lamb is a good find for shady gardens, as it prefers to grow in the shade, hiding its ornamental leaves and melliferous flowers from the hot sun, which causes burns on the leaves, which lead to their drying out.
Unpretentious to soil, it can grow on any garden soil. But for Yasnotka, spotty or speckled soil requires fertile soil. For better development and formation of full-fledged nectar for bees, it will still be more reliable if, when planting seedlings in open ground, 3-6 kg of organic fertilizer are applied per square meter of land.
If you correctly determine the place of planting of the lamb, then you can not be afraid of diseases and pests.
Lamb is very hygrophilous, and therefore requires frequent watering.
It tolerates both high and low air temperatures.
Reproduction
In addition to the fact that the lamb itself spreads with great success, its bushes can be easily divided into parts in the spring to share with friends, neighbors or to breed a curtain in another place.
Spotted lamb can be propagated by green cuttings, which are planted immediately to a permanent place in open ground, without wasting time rooting in trays or pots.
When purchasing a lamb in horticultural centers, choose compact bushes with numerous large flowers.
