Fireweed is one of the plants in the family called fireweed. In Latin, the name of this plant sounds like this: Epilobium or Chamaenerion. As for the name of this family itself, in Latin it will be like this: Onagraceae.

The homeland of this plant is the extratropical zones of both hemispheres. The life form of this plant is a herbaceous plant that can be both annual and perennial.

Description of fireweed

Actually, it should be noted that the height of the fireweed can even exceed the height of a person: it all depends on the type of this plant. The rhizome of fireweed is pivotal, it is quite thick, and also creeping. The stem of the plant will be erect and branched, and also smooth. It is worth noting that the leaves are also smooth, and besides that, they are also whole. In shape, the leaves of the fireweed will be lanceolate, they are located along the stem either opposite or alternately. The flowers of the plant are collected in rather large and very long clusters, which are located at the tops of the stems. It is noteworthy that most types of fireweed are painted in rich lilac-red tones. The fruit of this plant is a capsule. The seeds of the plant are rather small and also have rather long hairs.

Fireweed is a very numerous family, in total there are about fifty different species of this plant. However, only seventeen species are found on the territory of Russia.

Features of growing and care

It is worth noting that the growing conditions for this plant will be directly dependent on the type of fireweed. Actually, we can say that most of the fireweed species require moist soils, for this reason, these plants will develop most favorably on the banks of reservoirs or in marshy lowlands. It is noteworthy that such a plant as hairy fireweed is able to endure flooding even up to ten centimeters. As for such a plant as narrow-leaved fireweed, dry and sandy soils will be most preferable to it. Mountain fireweed will develop more favorably on crushed stone and sandy soils.

Those plants that require moist soil are widely used as a decoration for water bodies. In addition, fireweed can also contribute to the consolidation of the soil: this is especially true of the type, which is known as ivan-chai. The same mountain species, which are not particularly large in size, will be great for various rock gardens. It is worth noting that some types of this plant are quite suitable for food, they are very often added to salads. And the leaves of this plant can be used to make tea. In addition, it should be noted that fireweed is also a medicinal plant, and its healing properties have been known since ancient times. In addition, fireweed is also an excellent honey plant.

It is noteworthy that fireweed is such a plant that does not require special care. It is important to cut off those plant stems that have already bloomed. This is done to prevent seed ripening. The plant should be pruned in the spring to ensure the fastest growth of fireweed. It is important to note that the development of most species of this plant occurs very quickly, therefore it is so important and timely to control the growth of this plant.

The propagation of this plant is done by means of seeds. Quite often, fireweed can be attacked by aphids. The leaves of the same plant that grows on excessively moist soil can be quite abundantly covered with mold.
