Many vegetables in our garden are not very comfortable - they are thermophilic and would be happy to warm themselves in a greenhouse. But for cabbage in the middle lane - the very place! Moreover, this year's summer turned out to be just the right one, as culture loves - cool and rainy. But, as you know, the nature of the weather is capricious, and her mood changes quickly. What care will the cabbage require in case of the return of hot days and what else do you need to know about its cultivation?
Cabbage watering rules
By the middle of summer, cabbage has, as a rule, tied heads of cabbage. This process is more successful if the weather is favorable for this outside the window. The optimum temperature for vegetable growth is + 16 … + 18 ° С.
If it's hot outside, the plant has to take steps to protect itself. Cabbage does it this way: the leaves evaporate a large amount of moisture and thus save themselves from overheating. But the process of forming the fork is delayed. Therefore, in the heat, one must not forget that cabbage is very much in need of water.
But do not think that after visiting your summer cottage once a week and watering the cabbage beds abundantly, you can forget about it until your next visit. Cabbage needs regular watering. If you do this by raids, you can ensure that the heads of cabbage eventually begin to crack from excess moisture after a long drought. Of course, such a vegetable can be eaten, but these copies will be poorly stored. Therefore, they will need to be immediately recycled.
In order to prevent such defects on your cabbage, you should adhere to this watering regime:
• water the beds every 3-4 days;
• in hot weather, the frequency of soil moistening is increased;
• when forks are formed, watered cabbage every other day;
• there is no need to additionally pour water on the beds after heavy rain;
• to avoid cracking, stop watering 15-20 days before harvesting.
Those who visit their infield less often than necessary can be advised for the future to select varieties that are less susceptible to cracking. After all, we cannot control the weather, and if after a long drought it rains just before harvesting, this will increase the risk of getting a harvest of cracked heads of cabbage. By the way, red cabbage is less susceptible to this weakness, so it makes sense to think about growing this variety as well.
It is also worth mentioning how sometimes gardeners, in order to reduce the area of moisture evaporation, tear off the lower sheets. That's just an important nourishing organ of the plant. Even when it turns yellow, there is an outflow of nutrients from it into the forming head of cabbage. Therefore, even in the second half of July, with outlined heads of cabbage, these leaves should be left in place.
Features of feeding cabbage
In addition to moisture, cabbage is also demanding on the nutritional quality of the soil. At the initial stage of development, it needs record amounts of nitrogen, so the beds should be well filled with organic matter. But during the formation, the feeding fork should be complex. If there is a lack of potassium and phosphorus, loose heads of cabbage will be provided to you.
The state of its leaves will tell you what elements your green pet lacks. If the veins turn blue, it means that the cabbage lacks phosphorus. When the leaves turn yellow, the gardener may think that the beds are lacking moisture. In the meantime, this could be a signal that the cabbage is suffering from a potassium deficiency. If you do not provide it with this element, the leaves will become completely brown.
Top dressing is done on wet soil, and even better - in dissolved form, especially during dry periods. If your site is located on sandy soil, it must be borne in mind that here fertilizers are more likely to be washed out of the upper layers. To compensate for this disadvantage, the dose of fertilizers is made less, but they are applied more often - once every one and a half to two weeks.
