Mimulus occupies a leading position among the annuals. The variety of colors allows you to create a bright carpet pattern in the flower bed. Let's take a closer look at a beautiful representative of the flora
Versions
There are 2 assumptions about the name of the genus. From the Latin language mime is translated as a magician. The word mimo means "monkey" (the similarity of the corolla resembles the face of a playful monkey). In America, in its historical homeland, it is called the monkey flower.
In Russia, the name "lipstick" has taken root more. The bent upper "lip", relative to the lower part, resembles a grimace of a capricious young lady. The variegated coloration with a mottled pattern, with hairs on the velvety underside, indicates the insects' path to nectar. Promotes pollination, setting a large number of seeds.
Sowing
Mimulus is propagated by seeds collected during full ripening. Small dusty grains (7000 pieces per 1 g) are laid out on the surface of fertile soil in March. Moisten the earth from the spray bottle. Cover with a plastic bag.
Seedlings appear in 2 weeks at a temperature of 16-18 degrees, develop rapidly. In the phase of 2-3 true leaves, the seedlings are dived into separate cups in bunches of 2-3 plants in each. If necessary, “young growth” is illuminated with phytolamps in the morning and evening hours.
They are fed twice with a complex fertilizer, reducing the rate by 2 times. In early June, the bushes are ready for transplanting into open ground.
Vegetative reception
In indoor culture, mimulus is a perennial plant. The specimens saved in the winter are propagated by cuttings.
In March, 5-7 cm long shoots are cut from the mother bushes. Dust with root powder. Planted in separate cups. To maintain compactness, they are supplemented with lamps.
Preferences
Mimulus loves light areas, easily puts up with openwork penumbra. It responds well to additional watering during dry periods.
Protection from cold northwestern winds in the form of buildings and trees creates favorable conditions for development. Prefers loose, fertile substrates with a neutral reaction of the environment.
Care
Bushes are planted in a permanent place when the threat of morning frost has passed. The distance between neighbors is set to 25-30 cm, taking into account future growth. Distribute in parallel rows in a checkerboard pattern.
Instead of clean water, the hole is spilled with a solution of "Zdraven", which provides additional nutrition, improves the adaptation of seedlings in a new place.
Gradually, the buds move from the center to the periphery, the shoots are stretched out. Pruning at the end of June helps to preserve decorativeness, to stimulate re-flowering.
New branches growing quickly will form more buds. The second wave is notable for its abundance, lasting until the very frost.
After pruning, mimulus is fed with Fertika complex fertilizer. During dry periods, regular watering is required.
Usage
Plants planted on the banks of reservoirs, along the edge of a flower garden, on alpine hills, rockeries look beautiful. Ampel options are used in containers, gazebos, on the north side of the house.
In flowerpots, due to the small volume of soil, pets need constant watering. Creeping specimens are placed under shrubs, trees on the sunny side.
Storage conditions
The colors you like in the fall, without waiting for a sharp drop in temperature, are transplanted into spacious pots with a volume of 3-4 liters. Cut off the vegetative mass, leaving 2-3 cm.
Install in the coolest, lightest room. Water it occasionally. In March, a new wave of vegetation begins.
Motley "lips" will create bright curtains in your garden, pleasing to the eye throughout the summer. Make friends with this wonderful flower!
