Sedge is one of the best plants for decorating coastal areas and water bodies. You can meet him literally all over the world, in completely different climatic zones, including in the steppe expanses and in the highlands. About four hundred species of sedge grow on the territory of endless Russia, and each of them is interesting and original in its own way
Getting to know the plant
Sedge is a representative of the large Sedge family, which is characterized by a rather interesting three-row arrangement of leaves.
The fibrous root system of this herbaceous perennial is formed by amusing adventitious roots that grow vertically or obliquely downward. And its main root, like other monocotyledonous vegetation, dies after the seeds germinate (this happens 2 - 3 months later). The development of adventitious roots usually occurs at the bases of the vertical parts of the shoots.
As for the shoots, in the bulk of sedge varieties, they are of the rosette type. As a rule, only reproductive shoots are equipped with stalks. The leaves of this bizarre aquatic inhabitant are three-rowed and very interesting. Scale-like lower leaves may be absent in a number of varieties of this plant. The middle leaves of sedge are provided with tongues in the form of narrow membranous edges - the level of development of such tongues in different plant species is not the same. And the upper leaves are the covering leaves of individual spikelets of inflorescences.
Sedge flowers can be both pedunculated and sessile. In the axils of the scales or coverts, they are usually located one at a time. Sedge begins to bloom in early spring, from the very end of April to June.
One-seeded bizarre fruits of this aquatic inhabitant are equipped with rather rigid pericarp. In addition, they do not open at all, and in cross sections they look either biconvex (if they are formed by two carpels), or triangular (if there are three carpels). Just like flowers, they can be located on small legs or be sessile. It happens that at the bases of these fruits, linear or bristly axial appendages enclosed in sacs are formed.
Sedge application
Sedge is very useful in everyday life. Hare sedge is used to stuff various pieces of furniture with it. And for hunters, so that the soles of shoes do not crumple, sedge is underlain in boots and boots - they say it helps a lot. The graceful, low, and sometimes stop-shaped varieties of sedge in the notorious Gorny Altai were dried and subsequently stuffed with them on pillows and mattresses. Also, instead of insoles, they were placed in shoes, they served as footcloths, and during construction they served as analogues of moss and tow when laid in the grooves formed between the logs.
The durable fiber of attractive sedge has long been used for weaving mats with mats, as well as handbags. Sedge perfectly fixes mountain slopes and sandy soils. This plant also serves as a good food for fish and waterfowl, and dead organs of sedges growing in swamps can be found in peat.
Since ancient times, the properties of sedge have been appreciated in folk medicine. Numerous decoctions and infusions of sedge of various species have a fairly wide spectrum of action. But in pharmacology, only Parva sedge has found application, from which brevicollin hydrochloride, which enhances uterine contractions, is made.
Nowadays, a huge number of sedge species serve as an adornment of reservoirs in a fairly popular landscape design. They have proven themselves not only in creating rock gardens with rockeries, but also in planting on lush lawns and luxurious mixborders, as well as in picturesque forest areas and in beautiful shady gardens.
How to grow
It is recommended to grow sedge in sunny, open areas. In principle, some of its species develop very well even in shady areas. It reproduces both by dividing the bushes and by seeds.
Sedge without fail should be provided with abundant watering. Also, from time to time, you will have to limit the growth of most species of this perennial so that they do not fill the entire surrounding space.
Dry leaves should be cut off annually in spring - this is done in order to preserve the excellent decorative effect of sedge. And it is not susceptible to attacks of pests and various diseases at all.
