Shadow saxifrage (Latin Saxifraga umbrosa) - an ornamental garden plant, suitable for growing in shady areas; a representative of the genus Saxifrage of the Saxifrag family. In nature, it is distributed on the shady slopes of Western Europe. Often the species is called the urban saxifrage.

Characteristics of culture

Shadow saxifrage is an evergreen perennial herb up to 8 cm high, forming in the process of growth numerous compact rosettes, interconnecting and resembling low rugs with peduncles towering above them, bearing loose inflorescences.

Leaves are dark green, dense, leathery, obverse lanceolate or obovate, short pubescent, short petiolate, coarse at the edge, rounded at the tips, up to 5 cm long. The flowers are small, numerous, light pink, collected in paniculate inflorescences, ascending on peduncles 10-15 cm high. Fruits are small capsules containing small seeds. Saxifrage shady blooms in the second decade of June - the first decade of July for 25-30 days.

Has many forms, including variegated, for example, Saxifraga umbrosa "Variegata" ("Variegata"). The form is represented by plants with foliage, decorated with creamy yellow stripes or specks, which look very touching and revitalizing against the background of greenery.

The following forms are also popular:

* Aureopunctata (Aurapunctata) - the form is represented by plants with dark green leaves covered with yellow dots or small specks.

* Aureovariegata (Auravariegata) - the form is represented by plants with green foliage with a light yellow border.

* Elliotis Variety (Elliotis Variety) - the form is represented by plants with small foliage, decorated with yellowish dots.

* Primuloides (Primulodis) - the form is represented by plants with small smooth foliage.

Shadow saxifrage is distinguished by high frost-resistant properties; even in the conditions of the Middle Lane, it hibernates without any problems under a layer of snow, without freezing. Unlike other species, it does not suffer from the harmful effects of the direct rays of the spring sun. Plants quickly recover regardless of damage, practically not affected by pests and diseases. It is not a whimsical plant, readily develops in shady areas.

Growing features

Shadow saxifrage is undemanding to growing conditions, in addition, it does not take much time for gardeners to carry out care procedures. Saxifrage reproduces by dividing rosettes. The division can be carried out in the spring or after flowering, but no later than the end of August, otherwise the plants will not have time to take root before the onset of stable cold weather. The division is carried out at least once every 3-4 years.

It is recommended to plant plants in shady areas; zones under the canopy of trees with an openwork crown are quite acceptable. It is important that the soils are drained, moderately moist, loose, permeable, rich in humus, without stagnant water. On sites open to the sun, the shade saxifrage should not be planted, there it loses its decorative effect, since it is unable to develop a beautiful and dense carpet due to a delay in development.

Plants can be planted in rocky areas, they go well with stones, even of huge sizes. It should be remembered that the saxifrage is a moisture-loving culture, but waterlogging can have a detrimental effect on its development; if this condition is neglected, saxifrage can rot and die. Short-term drought also negatively affects the development of culture, plants require systematic watering.
