Anubias Gillet, also called Anubias Gilletti, is a pretty cute inhabitant of reservoirs located in Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, Congo and Zaire. It grows, as a rule, along the coast, partially submerged in water or in damp soils, sometimes reaching absolutely incredible sizes. And the Gillet's Anubias growing in aquariums is characterized by a rather small size. And, although this plant is rarely seen among aquarists, it can give a unique look to any aquarium. Anubias Gillet is also good because he is able to adapt extremely quickly to a new environment and it is incredibly easy to endure changing conditions

Getting to know the plant

Anubias Gillet is endowed with a creeping rhizome reaching one centimeter in thickness. The bizarre leaf petioles of this spectacular marsh plant are almost always covered with tiny thorns that grow up to forty centimeters long and up to three millimeters wide. They are attached about a centimeter from the leaf blades.

Anubias Gillet leaves are equipped with leathery leaf blades with pointed tips. Young leaves are most often heart-shaped, and old ones are spear-shaped. Median long or narrow elongated lobes grow up to thirty centimeters in length and up to fifteen in width, and the length of the lateral lobes reaches ten centimeters. The color of the leaves can vary from light green to neutral greenish tones. Particularly large specimens have well-defined lateral lobes. Despite the fact that all the leaves sit quite tightly on the rhizomes, the thickets of Gillet's anubias often look rare due to its long petioles.

The length of the peduncles of this unusual aquatic inhabitant is, on average, twenty-two centimeters. During the ripening period, the cover leaves, which reach three centimeters in length, open briefly. The size of the cobs is identical to the size of the cover leaves, and their average length is two and a half centimeters. Each flower contains from three to five fused stamens, and quaint nests are located on the upper edges of the synandria. After flowering, the luxurious plant ripens tiny seeds up to 1 mm in length.

The high growth rate of Anubias Gillet usually does not differ, which is very pleasing to some aquarists.

How to grow

Anubias Gillet feels equally comfortable both in ordinary aquariums with funny fish, and in vessels completely designed for aquatic vegetation in a surface form.

As for the surface cultivation of an unusual marsh beauty, it requires special conditions, among which the high humidity of the atmosphere is taken as a basis. The humid conditions of paludariums or mini-greenhouses are ideal for Anubias Gillet.

When planting anubias Gillet, there is no need to bury its rhizomes in the ground - you just need to press it to the ground with small pebbles. The most suitable would be organic-rich, well-ventilated loose soil. Regular root feeding will also be useful.

In aquariums, Anubias Gillet grows much worse, even despite its ability to reach solid sizes, growing in marshy areas in nature. The illumination of the aquariums should be brought to the golden mean - neither too bright light nor excessive shading will benefit this handsome man, although Gillet's Anubias tolerates not too long shading very well. Daylight hours within ten hours a day will be the most optimal for him. The acidity of the water for growing this handsome man is preferable in the range from 6.5 to 7.5, and its temperature is in the range from 22 to 26 degrees. Also, water requires systematic filtration.

The condition of the leaf blades of the Anubias Gillet grown in aquariums must be monitored very carefully and algae appearing on their surface must be removed in a timely manner.

It is easiest to propagate Anubias Gillet vegetatively, dividing its creeping rhizomes into several small parts. And it is best to plant it in aquariums in the background.
