Attractive pennywort

Thyroid, also called hydrocotyl white-headed, grows in flowing and stagnant water bodies of distant South America, mainly in its tropical regions. This plant also has one more name - the white-headed shieldwort. It grows very quickly, besides, the shieldwort is extremely unpretentious. Very often it is happily grown in aquariums of completely different sizes - it looks incredibly impressive in the background. And in general, the shieldwort is very attractive

Getting to know the plant

Thyroid is a wonderful long-stemmed plant, whose rounded leaves reach four centimeters in diameter and are painted in a calm light green color. And the height of such an attractive amphibian plant often reaches half a meter.

Most often, the shieldwort is a perennial, but there are also annual varieties of it. Its stems can be either ascending or creeping. And sometimes rhizomes can be seen in this aquatic inhabitant. The leaves located on the petioles are not only simple, but also divided into lobes, with tiny membranous stipules. There are also serrated-toothed leaves along the edges, which look quite impressive.

The bisexual flowers of the leafwort at the tops of the shoots or in the axils of the leaves gather in bizarre umbellate inflorescences. However, sometimes you can see single flowers equipped with small bracts. And the ovoid flattened fruits of the scutellum are endowed with five ribs.

How to grow

Keeping an attractive pennywort is best in tropical aquariums. Planted in the ground, it reaches the water surface in the shortest possible time and begins to creep along it. Thanks to this property, the lower horizons are perfectly shaded in aquariums. And so that the shortage of light does not become a problem for all other aquarium plants, the shieldwort, which turns into a luxurious green carpet, should be thinned out from time to time. By the way, it is not at all necessary to root this bizarre plant in the ground - used as a free-floating plant, the shieldwort will serve as an excellent shelter for tiny fry.

It is allowed to cultivate the shieldwort both in paludariums and completely submerged. Moreover, if this handsome man is moved from an aquarium to a slightly marshy paludarium, it will not require adaptation at all. But when grown in a surface form, it is advisable to let it float on the water surface when moving into aquariums. Well, it should be planted in the ground, lowering it under water, it should only be after this handsome man gives at least a few young leaves.

Water with a temperature of 22 to 28 degrees is ideal for growing shieldwort. But if the water temperature begins to fall below these marks, such an original aquatic inhabitant will simply stop growing. As for the acidity and hardness of the water, they are of no particular importance for this handsome man - neither an alkaline nor an acidic environment will become an obstacle to the development of shieldwort. The composition of the soil does not really matter. Periodically, this aquatic inhabitant is given a water change, because if it is not changed for a long period, this pet begins to gradually degrade.

But the requirements for lighting are very high in the shieldwort - even a weak shading quickly leads to its decrease in size, and sometimes this is followed by the death of the aquatic beauty. Artificial lighting is organized both with the help of fluorescent lamps (for each liter of aquarium volume, their power should be approximately 0.4 - 0.5 W), and with the help of ordinary incandescent lamps (in this case, the power should be increased three times). However, when using simple lamps, it is important to be careful - the leaves of the shoots floating on the water surface can get burned. As for the duration of daylight hours, then it should be constantly maintained within twelve hours for the shieldwort.

Reproduction of the graceful shieldwort occurs by cuttings. If it develops in the right conditions, then even a tiny piece of stalk with a single leaf can produce a healthy and full-fledged plant.
