Monstera attractive (lat. Monstera deliciosa) - a fruit plant belonging to the Aroid family. Other names are delicious or gourmet monstera.

Description

Monstera attractive is a herbaceous and growing at lightning speed liana, capable of spreading along the trees growing in the neighborhood to a height of up to nine meters or even more. The stems of this plant are cylindrical, and their thickness can vary from 6, 25 to 7, 5 cm. All the stems are densely covered with strongly dissected leaves, and from below they put out a huge number of aerial roots - hard and quite long. The leaves boast a spectacular oval-heart-shaped shape and leathery surface, and they are attached to the trunks using long and straight petioles. In some cases, the length of these leaves can reach ninety centimeters, and in room conditions it usually does not exceed thirty centimeters.

Under especially favorable conditions, this culture produces fruits that look like berries and reach a length of twenty to thirty centimeters, and a width of 5 to 8, 75 centimeters. From above, all the berries are covered with a rather thick peel, and inside them there is an incredibly fragrant and juicy pulp. The consistency of the ripe berry pulp is very similar to a banana, and its taste is reminiscent of a combination of flavors of banana and pineapple.

The first stage of berry ripening is very easy to determine - their scales begin to slowly rise, and the berries themselves acquire a fairly strong aroma. However, they fully ripen for quite a long time - until every single segment of absolutely inedible peel falls off, and the juicy white pulp is completely exposed.

It is noteworthy that such fruits can be eaten gradually, that is, you can cut off the ripe areas of the fruits directly from the trees and thereby not interfere with the ripening of their other parts.

Where grows

Attractive Monstera originates from the subtropical and tropical forests of Panama, Mexico, Costa Rica and Guatemala. In the nineteenth century, it was brought to Southeast Asia, and now it is well known in almost all countries as an ornamental greenhouse and indoor culture. However, in tropical countries, in particular in India and Australia, it produces edible fruits, and it is for them that it is grown in these countries.

Application

The attractive monstera fruit is eaten fresh as a dessert. As for unripe fruits, they are very tasteless and are almost never eaten, since they contain quite a lot of oxalic acid salts, which can easily lead to irritation of the mucous membranes of the nose and mouth, followed by swelling.

The spectacular appearance of this plant allows it to be widely cultivated as a decorative one - the attractive monstera is indeed one of the most beautiful deciduous plants that can decorate the interior of almost any room. That is why it is so highly valued by flower growers. This culture can often be found not only in residential, but also in industrial, household and a number of other premises, in the halls of cinemas, clubs and hotels, as well as in store windows and in winter gardens. This beauty looks great as a lonely plant, but its small specimens allow you to create luxurious compositions with other greenhouse or indoor crops.

Contraindications

When using monstera, it is important not to forget that it contains substances that can irritate the mucous membranes and skin, and the juice of unripe berries can lead to inflammation of the oral mucosa or cause intestinal or stomach bleeding.
