Glossostigma povoinichkovaya, or glossa, is found in the waters of New Zealand, Tasmania and Australia. Most often, it grows entirely under water in swampy areas, as well as in lakes and rivers. You can keep this graceful beauty in aquariums - it will certainly become a magnificent design for them. For more than two decades, this aquatic inhabitant has been widely used in the design of the foreground of aquariums - the fancy rugs formed by this plant are very thin and extremely colorful. No wonder the povoinichkovaya glossostigma is called the queen of ground cover varieties of aquarium vegetation
Getting to know the plant
Glossostigma povoinichkovaya is a very gentle aquatic inhabitant, endowed with creeping shoots. These peculiar shoots sprout roots on all the nodules and very often branch. The entire and opposite teardrop-shaped leaves are colored in light green tones. The petioles of a beautiful aquatic inhabitant grow up to two centimeters in length. As for the length of the leaf blades, it is one centimeter or more, and their width often reaches six millimeters. Leaflets of glossostigma povoinichkovaya are naked, with blunt or notched apexes.
The individual axillary flowers of this water beauty, together with the pedicels, grow up to one centimeter, and the length of the four-lobed green cups often reaches two millimeters. Slightly shaggy white corollas of flowers, growing up to five millimeters, are distinguished by ciliate edges and are endowed with a three-lobed lower and two-lobed upper lip. Each flower is equipped with four stamens - two long and two short ones. And large tongue-like stigmas on the pistils slightly protrude beyond the corollas.
The fruits of the povoinichkovy glossostigma are bizarre capsules containing up to twenty seeds each.
How to grow
Glossostigma povoinichkovaya is a ground cover photophilous aquatic inhabitant with incredibly graceful forms. It develops and grows quite well in aquarium conditions. And in the summer, it can be used to plant home ponds around the edges - then the povoinichkovaya glossostigma will certainly delight with its marvelous flowering.
The high intensity of illumination helps to achieve the creep of the shoots of this aquatic beauty. And in case of a lack of light, they will grow up. Therefore, shallow and well-lit aquariums are ideal for growing Glosstigma.
When planting, an elegant aquatic inhabitant is recommended to be divided into separate whorls, each of which will contain no more than two leaves. And then all the whorls are planted, maintaining a distance of 1 - 2 cm between them. And after about a month, it will be possible to admire the wonderful green rug.
As for the aquatic environment, it will be just fine if it is possible to provide an excellent plant with soft water, characterized by a slightly acidic active reaction. And its temperature should be maintained in the range of twenty-two to twenty-six degrees. Also, periodically, you need to add various liquid dressings to the water.
Glossostigma is propagated, as a rule, by lateral shoots. When planting young stems in the ground, you should be extremely careful - if their delicate tissues are accidentally damaged, the plant will begin to rot and can die pretty quickly.
To make the boundaries of the povoinichkovy rugs formed by the glossostigma as clear as possible, the actively spreading stems are cut off - it is enough to do this weekly, one or two times. If you neglect this recommendation, the territory occupied by a marvelous aquatic plant can become simply huge. And after a wonderful rug reaches a height of three to four centimeters, it is even able to float. So a luxurious green rug should be cut periodically for this reason.
Glossostigma povoinichkovaya is distinguished by its cold resistance and unpretentious care, which makes it even more welcome in our latitudes.
