Tall deciduous trees with a spreading crown, large beautiful leaves and fragrant inflorescences-panicles of bell-shaped flowers prefer places with a mild and humid climate

Rod Paulownia

There are such a huge number of plants on our planet that the names of botanists and naturalists, which Karl Linnaeus liked to immortalize in the names of plants, are not enough for everyone. Therefore, some plants are given simpler names, and some are awarded royal names. This happened with the trees of the genus Paulownia or Adam's tree.

In the name of the genus, the patronymic of the daughter of the Russian Tsar Paul 1, Anna, has forever remained in the memory of people. Since patronymics were not in use in Europe, “Pavlovna” was taken as the second name of Anna and taken for the name of the genus of a group of plants.

Anna was the sixth daughter of the king, and therefore her birth added to the worries of the older generation, who were worried that there would be no worthy suitors for so many royal daughters. That is, the marriage of daughters in all ages has been a problem not only for poor people, but also for the rich, especially for the crowned heads.

But the ancestors worried in vain. A husband was found for Anna Pavlovna, and what kind: for 8 years and 5 months she was the queen of the Netherlands. And her grace, tenderness and kindness were forever embodied in a beautiful tree.

More than ten tree species up to 20 m high are members of the genus. Whole or slightly dissected large leaves fall for the winter, and in the spring, even before the appearance of fresh leaves, erect inflorescences-panicles of tubular-bell-shaped fragrant flowers bloom on the branches.

Paulownia felt (Paulownia tomentosa) is a fast growing tall tree. The curving trunk of a tree with a brownish-gray smooth bark firmly holds the pubescent branches bent upward, similar to human hands raised to the sky. Heart-shaped large leaves cling to branches with long petioles.

The spring leaves have not yet had time to hatch from the buds, and purple-pink long inflorescences, like festive candelabra, appear on the branches and fill the garden with the scent of flowers throughout May. The inflorescences leave behind bivalve woody oval capsules with countless small winged seeds inside, which stay on the tree for a very long time.

Paulownia lilac (Paulownia lilacina) - the leaves of the tree are heart-shaped at the base and pointed at the end. Light lilac flowers, decorated with purple specks. The garden is filled with aroma in May-June.

Paulownia Fortune (Paulownia fortunei) - they are distinguished by fragrant flowers that have absorbed several shades: they have a purple pharynx, which has a lilac shade on the outside, and the flowers themselves are cream.

Growing

Paulownia feels good in well-lit places, sheltered from the wind. Can grow in partial shade. Resistant to temperature fluctuations, but late frosts can harm flowering.

The trees are planted in March or October. It is better to choose a seedling of a small size and always with an earthen lump.

The soil needs fertile, slightly acidic or neutral, well-drained. Although it can grow on other soils, the main thing is that there is no excess moisture or excessive dryness. Watering is required at planting and during periods of prolonged drought.

Will be grateful for the organic fertilizers introduced during planting, as well as annual spring feeding with organic or mineral fertilizers. It is important not to overdo it with nitrogen to prevent overgrowth.

To maintain the appearance, you should remove damaged and ugly branches. A large amount of overgrowth is formed around the cut tree.

Reproduction

Propagated by seeds (in spring) and cuttings (in July).

Diseases and pests

Roots can be attacked by rot-causing fungi. Such copies must be removed so that the infection does not spread.

In hot and humid periods, grape powdery mildew is a danger.
