Stachis is cultivated as an annual plant. Interestingly, all of its parts are edible and incredibly healthy. And since its greenery has a very attractive decorative appearance, stachis is also grown as a decoration for flower beds in the garden. In the fall, its aboveground part dies off, and before the arrival of a hard frost, you need to have time to select plant tubers from the ground, which grow like potatoes. They are immediately eaten because they quickly become lethargic

Is it in the garden, in the vegetable garden?

For growing in the garden, you can recommend such varieties of stachis as Shell or Keg. Some are familiar with the edible stachis called the Chinese artichoke. But it has little in common with a regular artichoke. By its nature, it is more like a potato. Under the ground, it releases numerous shoots that grow into tubers. And the shape of these growths is very similar to seashells.

But if you want to decorate your plot with a beautiful ornamental plant or plant it in a pot as a house pet, choose woolly stachis or Byzantine purse. It is interesting not so much for its flowering, since the buds are rather inconspicuous and small, as for unusual stems and foliage covered with thick silvery villi.

Another useful quality of stachis is its amazing ability to exterminate weeds in the garden. Try to plant it where the ineradicable dream reigns supreme. In a couple of years, the stakhis will clear the site from it.

Stakhis in the garden bed

Stachis begin to be planted in April and continue in May. You can carry out subwinter planting. The tubers are immersed in the soil to a depth of about 7 cm. The holes in the row are dug at a distance of at least 30 cm, the row spacing is about 70 cm. It needs a large feeding area, the bush will be large, branched, up to 80 cm high. The growing season is long - about 130 days, but the harvest under the bush is very rich.

The plant is cold-resistant. The landing should be carried out in well-lit areas, since the stachis is photophilous. Prefers light loose soils, picky about the fertility of the earth. Does not tolerate stagnant water, excess moisture. If in the area where your site is located, there is a high occurrence of groundwater, it is better to arrange high beds under the stachis.

It is recommended to harvest the nodules before the end of October. The cleaning period can be extended if you build a shelter for the plants made of straw, a thick layer of fallen leaves, and straw manure. This will save the soil from freezing for a while.

The tubers wither quickly, but it will be problematic to eat the entire crop at once, since the plant has a high "productivity": one tuber will give life to hundreds of new ones. However, there is a way to extend the time during which they retain their presentation and taste. To do this, the tubers are placed in boxes with sand and hidden in the ground at a depth of about 0.5 m. In this form, they can keep fresh until the arrival of spring.

About the benefits of stachis

Stachis shells are prized for their high dietary qualities. Unlike potatoes, they do not contain starch. Instead, there is a substance called stachyosis, which is famous for its strong insulin-like effects. Therefore, stachis will be useful for patients with diabetes mellitus.

When cooking, stachis is brushed. Its peel is very tender, and you don't need to use a knife. The tubers are boiled in salted water and then fried with chopped onions. Can be added to vegetable salads, goes well with herbs.
