Ferns are representatives of the few ancient plants that have survived to this day. Perhaps it is thanks to this long-standing neighborhood with man that there are so many legends, myths and beliefs associated with this flower. Are you looking for a blooming fern on the night of Ivan Kupala? In order not to wander through the woods at night in search of happiness, start your own indoor fern pot. And if the legends are true, all doors will always be open in front of you
Fern keeping conditions
Modern ferns are native to tropical countries. And in a room with dry air, the plant will be uncomfortable. The fern will feel most comfortable in greenhouse conditions with regular frequent spraying in order to maintain the necessary microclimate humidity. Do not forget about this if this tropical guest finds himself in your home, especially on warm weather days, often spray him with water from a spray bottle. However, this procedure should be refrained from during cold snaps and in cloudy weather.
Ferns are placed in a well-lit room, but their leaves are protected from direct sunlight. Irrigation is carried out with a moderate amount of water. In winter, it is reduced, but not stopped at all - the roots must not dry out.
Fern breeding methods
Ferns reproduce by spores and vegetatively. But since there are a huge variety of fern species - tens of thousands, the methods of vegetative reproduction are sometimes very different.
For example, in indoor floriculture such representatives of ferns are very popular as:
• nephrolepis is a relatively short plant. From its vertical rhizome, a lush rosette of lanceolate leaves-branches about 50-70 cm long with many segments-feathers of a light green shade grows. They are used to decorate bouquets, since cut leaves do not lose freshness for a long time, they are also grown as a garden culture;
• maidenhair maple - has a more complex leaf structure compared to nephrolepis. The leaf plate is strongly dissected, twice and three times pinnate, in some species it is rhomboid. Leaves can be ampelous and standing;
• kochedyzhnik - grown in indoor floriculture, but also finds application in garden landscaping and park landscaping. Leaves are both lanceolate and in the form of a wide triangle. The plate is openwork, twice and three times pinnate. This is the shape that can be seen on ancient plant fossils.
Nephrolepis and maidenhair at home can be propagated by dividing the bush. Nephrolepis also forms offspring, and from the maidenhair, shoots can be taken to grow a new plant. Kochedzhnik is able to form practically ready-made seedlings of young plants on the leaves.
Some fern species form bulbs in the leaf axils. They are trimmed and placed in containers on the surface of the rooting substrate. It is possible to carry out rooting of the bulb without separation from the mother plant. To do this, leaves with axillary neoplasms are bent to the pot and crush their bases with deciduous soil. After that, the rooted planting material is transferred to separate containers for growing as independent plants.
To root the offspring, they are pinned to the ground and also crushed with a nutrient substrate. When new leaves develop on them, they are trimmed for growing in individual pots. To accelerate development, every two weeks young plants are fed in turn with mineral fertilizers and organic matter.
The following soil mixture is suitable for growing ferns:
• high moor peat - 1 part;
• coniferous land - 1 part;
• humus earth - 1 part.
For 1 kg of soil, it is useful to add 5 g of bone meal. And in the summer months, ferns are recommended to be fed with nitrogen fertilizers.
