In order to preserve pears as long as possible, it is important to strictly follow the rules for their storage. In the first part of the article, we talked about the most suitable pear varieties for long-term storage, as well as where it is best to store these aromatic fruits and what temperature will be the most optimal for this. Now it remains to find out if pears can be stored next to other fruits and vegetables and how best to store them
Can pears be stored with other vegetables and fruits
It is extremely undesirable to store pears next to any fruits or vegetables - the latter can easily share with pears their characteristic smell only for them. As a result, the harvested pears will deteriorate and begin to lose not only their beneficial properties, but also their taste.
What and how to store pears
It is highly undesirable to store pears on the floor in bulk, as they will quickly rot. Therefore, you need to take care of a suitable container for storing these healthy fruits. Of course, drawers work best for this. And in order for pears to constantly receive the required amount of air, all containers must necessarily have small holes.
Pears in boxes are laid out in layers, shifting each layer with straw or sprinkling it with small wood shavings. You can reshape layers of pears and paper (in two or three layers), as well as oak or maple leaves. Moss is also good for this purpose.
If there are no boxes suitable for storing pears, then you can build convenient wooden stands or racks. The stands must necessarily rise above the floor, ideally by about ten to fifteen centimeters. As for the shelving, they should be installed near the walls.
Place pears on prepared shelves with tails up. It is allowed to lay them in several layers, alternating each layer with straw or shavings.
Some gardeners prefer to store their pear harvest in the sand. First, the bottom of the container is covered with paper, and disinfected (by thorough heating) sand is poured over the paper. You need to pour it in a small layer. And pears are laid on the sand so that they do not come into contact with each other. Next, the container is filled to the top, alternating layers of pears with layers of sand. And in conclusion, from above, all the fruits are thoroughly covered with sand. Why is this method good? The sand does not allow air to reach the pears, respectively, they will not shrink. And the sand will absorb all the moisture from the air.
In addition, you can try to create conditions for pears as close as possible to the "gaseous environment". To do this, they are placed in polyethylene bags and sealed hermetically - this can be done using a heated knife. It is necessary to ensure that there are no punctures on the bags. It is equally important to observe the following condition - the temperature of the pears put into the bags should be equal to the air temperature at the storage place. If you ignore this rule, the fruits will rot rather quickly, as moisture will begin to collect inside the bags.
Well, if there are few pears, then it is quite possible to keep them in the refrigerator. Even autumn varieties of pears can survive in such conditions for up to five to six months. And winter varieties can easily lie in the refrigerator for six to eight months.
Throughout the entire storage period of pears, it is necessary to closely observe the fruits and sort them in a timely manner, rejecting spoiled specimens. This is very important because tainted and rotten pears can lead to the death of the entire crop.
What other form are pears stored in?
Pears can be stored not only fresh - they are used to make excellent jams, preserves and preserves. And they are also dried - excellent compotes can be cooked from dried fruits. By the way, dried pears are easily stored for several years.
