However, not everyone knows how to properly store cucumbers so that they remain elastic and as fresh as possible for as long as possible. If you follow a number of simple recommendations, you can feast on fresh cucumbers for more than a month. And cucumbers intended for pickling and pickling will retain their taste in the best possible way

The most suitable cucumbers for storage

Not all cucumbers can be stored for a long time, even if they are placed in the refrigerator for this purpose. The easiest way to save fresh cucumbers, which were grown in the open field and were collected directly from the beds. Their skin should be firm enough, without any rotted areas or any damage. Also, all cucumbers must be dry and clean.

Greenhouse salad varieties with very delicate skins are usually stored for only a few days. If the cucumbers were purchased in sealed packaging in a store, then it is better not to open them in advance, since they will deteriorate in just two or three days. And in packages, surrounded by carbon dioxide emitted by them, crispy vegetables can last for a month or more.

When purchasing cucumbers in a store, one cannot discount the fact that before getting into the store, they were already stored somewhere after they were picked. If you want to keep them in the refrigerator, it is better to stop the choice on the densest medium-sized cucumbers, on which there are no traces of rot and various damages. Overgrown cucumbers are usually less tasty, and overgrown vegetables dry out quite quickly. As for slightly wilted cucumbers, it is better to use them right on the day of purchase.

Cucumbers for salads and pickling

Of course, no one will argue with the fact that the fresher the cucumbers, the tastier and more attractive they are. These vegetables are considered the most delicious immediately after they are harvested, in the first few hours. So if you plan to cut only a couple of fresh cucumbers into a salad, it is better to buy fresh vegetables every time - there is no point in making weekly stocks in this case. In addition, fresh cucumbers are much tastier and juicier.

If the cucumbers were purchased for subsequent pickling or salting, they can be soaked in water - if the water is changed in a timely manner, the cucumbers will remain in this form for up to three days. At the same time, they will not fade and remain elastic. It is best to store your cucumbers in a bucket of water in a dry, cool place and out of direct sunlight.

If there are a lot of cucumbers, then they need to provide proper storage conditions. You can build a roomy rack for this - a decent number of boxes with cucumbers will fit on its shelves.

Cold storage

Fresh cucumbers collected from the beds are stored in the refrigerator for three to five days (for this they are placed in the vegetable compartment), and greenhouse store cucumbers will be stored in such conditions for a little longer - seven to eight days. The most important thing when storing cucumbers in the refrigerator is not to tie them tightly in bags. These green vegetables are 95% water, moreover, they release water during storage. And if you don't let them breathe, then the cucumbers will go bad pretty quickly. So in the refrigerator they are stored exclusively in open bags.

The shelf life of cucumbers in the refrigerator depends not only on the season, but also on their variety. Winter and spring store cucumbers keep very well in their usual home conditions for a week - their taste remains unchanged. But homemade cucumbers collected from the beds, it is advisable to store as little as possible. In principle, this is quite logical - the more natural the product, the faster it deteriorates and the less it is stored.
