And abroad, manna inundating grows in Europe, Turkey, North America, North Africa and even in Australia. Getting to know the plant
Floating mannik is a herbaceous cereal plant. It can be not only shallow, but also coastal. The height of this rhizome perennial ranges from one and a half to two meters. Its smooth stems first depart from the rhizomes at a slight slope, and then they rise up. Such peculiar stems end with panicles made in the form of large spikelets, facing in different directions. On one branch there can be 3 - 6 spikelets, and sometimes there are eight. Initially, all spikelets have a light green color, but gradually they turn brown and become covered with bizarre egg-shaped scales, the length of which sometimes reaches 3 - 3, 5 cm. From a distance, it seems that the mannae flowing is entirely painted in grayish-green tones.
The leaves of this plant are rough, slightly pointed and rather narrow - their width usually does not exceed one centimeter. These funny leaves do not lose their freshness until the onset of the winter season. Also, the flowing manna is endowed with a creeping rhizome equipped with underground shoots. Its flowers are greenish, and its fruits are ellipsoidal oblong caryopsis. Their outer sides are equipped with islets of columns, and the inner ones are rather flat and endowed with narrow grooves.
Application of the manna of the inflow
The seeds and internodes of the manna of the inflow are eaten and have a very peculiar and pleasant taste. The seeds of the caryopses of this plant contain starch (up to 75%), ash (0.6%), protein (10%), fiber (0.2%) and fat (0.4%). Seed procurement is complicated only by their extremely heterogeneous ripening. As a rule, they are harvested when the spikelets turn brown and the twigs turn yellow. If this moment is missed, then the seeds begin to crumble strongly during their collection.
These amazing seeds are used to bake tortillas, boil soups and cereals, and also prepare fillings for pies and various seasonings.
In a number of Western European countries, the nutritious grains of this plant are called "manna" and they make incredibly tasty sweet porridge from them. And the cereals from the seeds of the manna of the influx are called "Prussian semolina" or "Polish cereal". Its taste is vaguely reminiscent of rice or sago. Previously, such cereals were used as a very nutritious and light food product.
It is noteworthy that the leaves of the overflow manna are also suitable as a tobacco surrogate for smoking.
How to grow
Absolutely any soil for growing manna is suitable. But he will need a lot of light and sun. Manna is planted flowing into containers or directly into the ground. As for the planting depth, the most suitable for this would be a depth of twenty to forty centimeters.
This aquatic pet reproduces not only by dividing the bushes, but also by seeds. Regarding seeds, it is worth noting that they are best germinated with the onset of spring. In this case, the water layer should reach three to five centimeters. Germination takes about three weeks on average. And at the end of spring, it is permissible to sow seeds directly into open ground.
From time to time, the spread of the manna that is flowing in must be limited, since it grows quite strongly. That is why it is recommended to remove excess shoots. As a rule, pruning of the manna of the inflow is carried out either in the fall or in early spring. Also, this plant has good winter hardiness and cold resistance, which makes it easy to grow it in our area. And the flowing manna will not require special care.
