Walking through the streets of the city, I noticed a large number of plants with golden fluffy inflorescences. The impression is that the bright sun peeped out from behind the clouds on a cloudy day. The mood immediately rises, the soul becomes light and comfortable. The flower that gives positive is called solidago

Habitat

In Russia, there were many names for this plant: golden rod, goldenrod, flea beetle, honey cake, hornbeam, yellow flowers, golden feather, puff. All of them are associated with the structure or properties of culture. Each province gave its name to the fluffy bushes. It translates from Latin as "strong", "healthy", due to the presence of healing properties.

North America is considered the homeland of solidago. There are over 80 species here. 23 varieties grow on the territory of Russia. It is found in the wild in the Caucasus, western and eastern Siberia, the Far East, and the Middle Belt.

Loves light forests, edges, clearings, glades, roadside ditches, meadows.

Biological features

A perennial plant with a lignified tap root. Stems are straight, 25-100 cm high, with weak pubescence. The leaves are oblong-ovate, alternate, the lower ones are on petioles, the upper ones are sessile. The edge is slightly serrate.

The inflorescences of the basket consist of two types: the edging of reed flowers, the center - tubular variants of a yellow shade, collected in panicles or brushes. Tough petals adorn the stems for a month. Blossom from July to September. Low-growing varieties bloom earlier than tall specimens. Pollinated by wind, insects.

The fruit is a ribbed, pubescent achene 0.4 cm long, equipped with a tuft, which allows the planting material to be transported over considerable distances.

Varieties

The varietal diversity of solidago has increased in recent years due to foreign breeding hybrids. The basis was two types of canadian goldenrod (low and medium plant growth) and hybrid (tall specimens).

The most popular varieties are:

1. The Golden Dwarf. Low-growing bush 30cm tall with lush clusters of bright yellow complex inflorescences. Blooms in July, continues to please the eye for 1, 5-2 months. Forms little overgrowth. Slowly builds up mass. Does not require a tie to the support.

2. Cloth of Gold. Dwarf variety up to 30cm high. Bright yellow small inflorescences are collected in large panicles. No garter required. It opens from June to September. Winter-hardy.

3. Patio. The height of the bushes is no more than 40cm. Half is occupied by the brushes of fluffy lemon-yellow inflorescences, pleasing to the eye for 1, 5 months, from July to August. Winter hardiness is high.

4. Dzintra. A strong bush reaches a height of 60cm. The dark green thick stems bear a multitude of shiny malachite leaves. The inflorescence is golden, umbellate, dense in structure. The buds bloom from mid-July to autumn.

5. Golden Dwarf. Hybrid version up to 60cm high with saffron inflorescences 15-20cm long. Late variety blooms from August to October. Perfect for autumn bouquets. Has high winter hardiness.

6. Perkeo. An early variety up to 60cm tall. The bush has a conical structure. Pistachio strong shoots have narrow emerald leaves 7 cm long with small teeth at the edges. Miniature golden-yellow baskets are collected in brushes, reaching 20cm. Flowering period 40 days, from July to August.

7. Goldjunge. The fragrant variety grows up to 120cm. The stems are strong, firmly holding the plant. The leaves are elongated, have a grayish tint on the reverse side, with smooth edges. The panicles are dense, bright yellow, gracefully curved up to 40 cm long. Blooms at the end of the summer season. Weakly affected by diseases.

The list of varieties can be extended endlessly. Scientists continue to work on developing new varieties of the beautiful flower.

We will consider techniques for reproduction of solidago in the next article.
