Decorating with bryophytes is at the height of fashion today. A moss garden is an amazing decoration for any site, it is quickly created and does not require investment. We offer recommendations for organizing a green oasis on the site: where and how to collect, where and how to plant

Moss in the design of the site

The soft velvety surface of the moss is conducive to relaxation, evokes an ecstatic and enchanting sensation. Moss adds a velvety fairy-tale flavor to any landscape object. It looks perfect on stone, wood, paths.

Mossy plants are a common natural material popular in outdoor and indoor design. There are many varieties of moss, there are more than 10 thousand species, subdivided into genera and families. Basically, these are small plants, no more than 5 cm in height. They are able to absorb and retain moisture, regulate the water balance, and protect the soil from erosion. Bryophytes are valued for their appearance, unpretentiousness, easy reproduction and evergreen appearance.

Despite their short stature, mossy plants are not inferior in decorativeness to flowering garden plants. Depending on the species, they have a variety of colors, textures and beautiful spore-bearing capsules. The range of colors is large: from pale green to brownish red. These characteristics are highly regarded by designers.

Rockeries / rock gardens, stumps, rocky framing of garden ponds, create colorful velvet lawns with mosses. The technique of creating a mossy stone is widespread; such elements are included in compositions with conifers and in rocky gardens. Bryophytes are popular in flower beds, ponds, dry streams, fountains and garden paths.

How to create a moss garden

Choose a location for mosses in partial shade and where it is humid. Such places can be found on every site: the northern side of any building, gazebos, under the crown of a spreading tree, in niches of boulders and stones. It is advisable that the sun comes in there early in the morning or closer to sunset.

Moss will grow well on garden soil. A beautiful lawn can be set up under the crown of a large tree and in an open but shady area. Your “piece” will be unique - take several varieties and assemble a velvety lawn from the mossy fragments.

If you have a wetland where nothing can be grown, then the moss will act as a decorator. Such a landscape will harmoniously include stones, ceramic pots, driftwood covered with a scattering of bryophytes.

The success of your event directly depends on the acidity of the soil. Experienced florists first analyze the composition of the soil. The ideal PH is in the range of 5-6.5, plus moisture and shade.

Where to get moss

Those who wish can buy decorative moss in a flower shop, but decorating florists often collect such material in a coniferous forest. The advantage of the first option is a variety of textures with colors, the disadvantage is a scanty amount and an unknown habitat.

When you collect it yourself, you immediately get the right amount. You have a high probability of survival, since the material is from your region, and you have seen the habitat. To decorate the stone, you collect moss pads from the stones. To decorate driftwood - from tree trunks, for a green carpet - from the soil. All this guarantees a good survival rate.

When collecting, look for different specimens that vary in shade, texture, and height. Try to choose the thickest specimens with rich color. Do not tear off from the base, but use a scoop to dig in the moss pads and carefully separate from the base. Mossy turf is best placed in a basket.

How to plant moss

You need to plant moss in the fall - it will take root better. The land is prepared in advance from peat and black soil (1: 1), to retain moisture, you can add expanded clay. The ideal will be the land brought from the place of collection. If possible, bring some for adaptation.

Before planting, place the mossy turf in a bucket of water so that it is well moistened. The soil for planting should be 5 cm loosened, free of weeds. If you plan to place moss between the stones, make holes and put the prepared substrate there.

Moss pads are planted according to a conceived plan: stripes, ornament, checkerboard pattern or a plain carpet. In any case, space is left between the elements to grow. In conclusion, all the decomposed pieces are compacted until they fully adhere to the soil and watered.

Tips

• If you are placing moss on an inclined surface, you will have to fix it so that it does not slip. Use a wire or stick in thin sticks like toothpicks.

• Plant only bryophytes that you removed from decaying wood on stumps.

• The monotony of the mossy surface is recommended to be “diluted” with partner plants: horsetail, reindeer lichen, lichens, ferns, bushes of strawberries, blueberries, blueberries, lingonberries.

• Moss is applied to stones in the form of a crushed mixture. Put moss, sugar, kefir or beer, yogurt in the blender. This mixture is coated with the desired item and covered with foil for 2-4 days.
