In October-November, it is time to move from theory to practice and engage in planting tulips and other bulbous flowers. Unfortunately, sometimes in practice it turns out that the flower garden that our imagination drew, in fact, turns out to be not so beautiful and harmonious. What mistakes can be made in the fall, which is why the flower bed disappoints the grower in the spring?
We select varieties of flowers for beautiful flower beds
It is not enough to pick flowers for your flower bed. It is also important to know such nuances, at what time the flowers bloom their buds, how high the stems will be, how close to place the planting material and whether it is necessary to extract it after flowering.
There are three basic principles for placing flowers of different heights on flower beds:
• if the flower bed is arranged near the fence, then the layout is as follows: tall plants are planted in the background, medium-sized plants are planted closer to the middle, and low-growing or ground cover plants near the curb;
• when the flower bed is round, placed in the middle of the site, then the highest flowers are planted in the center, and the low ones are placed closer to the periphery;
• in the event that it is planned to plant light-loving plants in the flower garden, then it is recommended to choose plants of approximately the same height so that they do not shade each other.
Now for the timing of flowering. If you want your flower bed to be pleasing to the eye throughout the summer, you can go in two ways:
• the first one is to choose bulbous flowers of the same flowering period, and when they fade, and the time comes to dig them up, sow this area with fast-growing annuals;
• the second is to pick flowers of different flowering periods, but then you need to remember to mark on the flower bed the places where the bulbs nest in order to pick them out of the ground in time, and it is better to plant in baskets so that you can painlessly pick up all the bulbs from the ground without disturbing other nearby plants.
Choosing a site for placing a flower bed
Why flower beds with tulips, daffodils and other bulbs do not always work out? One of the reasons lies in the fact that the planting of planting material occurs in the fall, and for this you need to choose a site that will not be swampy in the spring after the snow melts. In addition, the soil should be loose enough to absorb moisture well so that the bulbs do not end up in a puddle of water in the spring.
Among other things, tulips are just those plants that love the sun. So try to keep them out of the shadows. These are exactly the flowers that are good for picking up the same height for a flower bed.
In a hole, pot or basket?
It is not necessary to dig a separate hole under each onion. It is more convenient to plant tulips in a so-called nest - prepare a wide planting hole, in which to lay out the planting material in the order you would like. For example, alternating the bulbs of the variety through one.
To protect against rodents and frost, many people practice this option of planting as in a pot. But this is not a good way when you are about to plant flowers in a thick, solid carpet.
There are special plastic baskets for planting bulbs. They are less protective against rodents, but they provide more freedom for placement of planting material. And they are not only convenient for planting, but also for digging the bulbs in the summer. With this method, you will not lose the landmark, where is what grade, and also you will not lose the kids. Instead of baskets, they also use plastic boxes for vegetables and fruits.
Immediately it is necessary to warn that under the baskets you need to prepare a wide planting pit with a well-leveled bottom so that voids do not form between the soil and the container, and the roots can immediately "grab" the ground.
It is desirable to cover the bulbs with loose fertile soil. A mixture of humus and peat is perfect for this. It is also recommended to mulch the winter planting of flowers.
