Acanthopanax (lat. Acanthopanax) - healing culture; a representative of the genus Akantopanax of the Araliev family. The genus includes about 20 species that are naturally found in the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, as well as in the Khabarovsk and Primorsky territories and in the Amur region. Plants grow mainly along forest edges, in riverside forests, on hills in swampy taiga and along wooded shores.

Characteristics of culture

Acantopanax are evergreen or deciduous shrubs or small weakly branched trees with powerful shiny green-brown shoots and thorny branches. Leaves are petiolate, axial, compound, palmate, formed on short shoots. The flowers are small, few in number, in umbellate or large paniculate inflorescences. Fruits are black, berry-like.

All representatives of the genus are unpretentious, undemanding to growing conditions, most do not differ in winter-hardy properties. Acantopanax prefer water and air permeable, moist, loose and nutritious soils. They have high decorative properties due to the original foliage. Often used to create hedges, in small groups and single plantings.

Common species in Russia

In Russia, only two types are especially popular:

* Acanthopanax spread out (Latin Acanthopanax divaricatus) - the species is represented by shrubs up to 3 m high. Japan is the homeland. The species in question blooms in the second half of August - the first decade of September for 15-20 days. It begins to bear fruit in the 10th year, it does not bear fruit annually. Unlike other representatives of the genus, the species is winter-hardy; in severe winters, immature shoots freeze slightly. Propagated by seeds and cuttings. The second method is more effective, as a rule, up to 100% of cuttings are rooted.

* Acanthopanax sessiliflonis (Latin Acanthopanax sessiliflonis) - represented by highly branched shrubs up to 3 m high with a beautiful spherical crown and light gray trunks. Young shoots are ash-gray with a yellowish tinge; single thorns widened at the base are formed on them. Leaves are long-petiolate, compound, up to 12 cm long. Flowers are brown-violet or dark purple, rather small, collected in capitate spherical inflorescences. The species in question blooms within 20-30 days. Fruits are oblong, black, not edible. Blooms in the third year of life, begins to bear fruit for 4 years, sometimes later.

The subtleties of reproduction and cultivation

Acantopanaxis reproduce by seeds and vegetatively. The seed method is laborious and ineffective. Seeds, even with good care, germinate only after 1-2 years. Seeds remain viable for 1 year. Also, the culture is propagated by cuttings and root suckers. Cuttings are cut in the summer. Strong and healthy shoots are used for cutting. Even without treatment with growth stimulants, up to 100% of cuttings are rooted.

In addition to growing conditions: the soil along the entire projection of the crown must be constantly moistened, it must not be overmoistened, just like it must not dry out. Good drainage is the key to the health of Acantopanax. Representatives of the genus are light-loving plants, although they grow well with a weak shade. When planting, the planting pits are filled with a mixture that includes mineral and organic fertilizers (in the second case, compost or humus is preferable, but in no case fresh manure, it will damage the roots).

Further feeding is carried out once a year. It is advisable to apply fertilizers in early spring. Acanthopanax does not need shelter for the winter, but this rule does not apply to all species, only frost-resistant ones. Most species of the genus are resistant to diseases and pests, but preventive treatments will not harm, especially when it comes to organic infusions. Mulching the soil at the foot is not prohibited, such a procedure will slightly facilitate the work of caring for shrubs, in particular, it will save you from weeding and frequent watering.
