Narcissus poetic, or white daffodil is a flowering culture; grows naturally on the mountain slopes and meadows of the Mediterranean and southern Europe. In Latin, its name will sound like this Narcissus poeticus. This plant species belongs to the genus Narcissus of the Amaryllis family.
Characteristics of culture
The poetic narcissus rises about 25 centimeters above the ground. The double peduncle at the base is surrounded by 2 - 4 narrow basal leaves of a dark green color, with a length equal to the length of the stem and bright inflorescences on top. Two snow-white flowers each consist of six lobes, in the middle of which there is a flat saucer-shaped crown with a bright red corrugated edge.
The poetic narcissus is one of the founders of many breeding species. Also, with the help of selection, the poetic terry daffodil (var. Flore - pleno hort) was bred, which is a very large hybrid. It reaches a height of 45 centimeters, and the inflorescences are about 10 centimeters in diameter. The poetic terry narcissus, like the usual poetic narcissus, is ideal for creating bouquets and flower arrangements.
Care
A garden bed with planted bulbs must be covered in winter so that they do not freeze; mulching film, peat and foliage are best suited for this. In the spring, the covering material is removed, while the mulching layer can be left. When caring for daffodils, special attention should be paid to plant feeding, watering, loosening and weeding, especially during the flowering period, since at this time the bulbs consume the greatest amount of nutrients.
This flower culture is transplanted every three years, after this period, too few nutrients remain in the soil and the plants begin to bloom weakly. So that the time between transplants does not decrease, you need to regularly weed the garden bed, since the weeds draw out trace elements not only from the soil, but also from the bulbs. When the inflorescences begin to open with them, you can decorate the premises, with the correct cutting, the plants will delight for a long time with their beauty and unique aroma.
Daffodil cutting rules
In order for cut flowers to remain fresh for a long time, you need to follow some rules.
It is necessary to cut flowers at a certain stage of plant development. For daffodils, this phase begins at the time of the opening of the perianth, if during this period the stem is separated from the bulb, the flowers will stand in the vase for about 12 days.
The buds must be cut at a certain time of the day, since flowers cut during the bright daytime sun do not stand in a vase for a long time, it is best to choose the morning or evening time for this, when the sun has not yet risen or has already gone down. If the day is cool and cloudy, then the flowers can be cut at any time. In the event that there is a lot of water on the inflorescences, which happens immediately after rain or watering, then you need to wait until the moisture evaporates, otherwise the daffodil petals will quickly darken and deteriorate.
It is better not to cut the peduncles with a knife or scissors, since harmful bacteria can be on the blade, which, when they hit the stem, penetrate the bulbs and lead to their illness and subsequent death. It is best to manually break the stem and separate it from the bulb. After cutting, the daffodils should be held down in the buds to prevent the sap from escaping from the stems, which is conducive to wilting.
After the flowers have been cut, they must be immediately lowered into the water and an oblique cut about 0.5 - 1 centimeter long is made under water so that air does not get into it, which will make it difficult for the liquid to pass through the peduncle. At the same time, it is advisable to immediately remove the leaves in the water, since they quickly rot and contribute to the development of bacteria, and also the evaporation of moisture by plants decreases and retains the freshness and decorativeness of flowers for a longer period.
When storing cut flowers in vases, it is advisable to add antiseptic drugs to the water and feed with a special solution. For all types of daffodils, it is recommended to add sugar at the rate of 30 grams per 1 liter of water as a nourishing agent and an antiseptic that prevents the development of harmful fungi and bacteria. Boric acid can be used as an antiseptic in a proportion of 0.1 gram per 1 liter of water.
If you put different types of plants in one vase, then they will have a bad effect on each other and will stand very little, it is best to arrange them in different places to maintain freshness and increase the shelf life. At night, it is advisable to transfer the vase to a cool place, and during the day to return it back to the light, but so as to avoid direct sunlight on the flowers. The water in the vases must be changed every day, and the nutrient solution must be added every 2 days.
