Narcissus large-crowned is a perennial corm plant, belongs to the Amaryllis family. Europe is considered the birthplace of this flower culture, as well as the country located along the Mediterranean Sea. Scientists from England were engaged in active breeding of this type of daffodils, more than 200 varieties were bred by breeding the large-crowned daffodil and other representatives of this plant species.

Characteristics of culture

The large-crowned daffodil is a large white or yellow inflorescence about 10 centimeters in diameter. The inflorescence consists of six equal lobes and a bright orange, corrugated, tubular, elongated crown. The peduncle is leafless, tubular, long, solitary, 30-50 centimeters high. Around one peduncle, near the roots, there are 2-4 long, thin, dark green leaves. The tubers of the large-crowned daffodil are small, about 3 centimeters in diameter, the bulb is covered with neat scales. The root system is constantly changing, every year old roots die off, new ones grow to replace them. This description is very conditional, since this type of daffodil has a lot of varieties, and each is unique in its own way.

The most popular varieties of large-crowned daffodil

Velaskes (Velasquez) - has a very large corrugated crown and a contrast of colors: the crown is bright orange, and the petals are soft cream.

Carlton (Carlton) - bright yellow inflorescence with a long, tubular, yellow, wavy crown.

China made is a pure white flower with the same snow-white crown. The only bright spot of this variety is the bright yellow wavy border of the crown.

Professor Einstein is a snow-white flower with a fiery red crown.

Debutant (Debutant) - this variety is distinguished by a combination of snow-white petals and a rich pink crown.

Flower Record (Flower Record) - a snow-white flower with a bright yellow corrugated crown.

The Confuoko variety - has a very noticeable color, the petals are bright yellow, the color of the crown is rich scarlet.

Paola Veronez (Paola Veronez) - snow-white petals, orange crown with a wavy yellow edging.

Rosy Sunrise (Rosy Sunrise) - white inflorescence with a pale yellow crown

Kissproof (Kispruf) - a contrast of delicate peach petals with a bright orange long, tubular, wavy crown.

Scarlet O'Hara (Scarlet O'Hara) - rich yellow petals with a bright red crown.

Breeding features

Daffodils belong to corms, that is, they reproduce in a vegetative way. This breeding method allows growers to breed this variety of daffodils unchanged, in their pure form. When purchasing the bulbs, you must make sure that they are healthy, the color must be uniform, without spots and signs of decay. At the beginning of summer, dried, washed and prepared tubers of each variety are planted in separate containers with pre-prepared soil, after which the containers are removed to a dark, well-ventilated, cool room.

The temperature at the location of the bulbs should be no higher than 8 degrees and not lower than 5 degrees Celsius. The bulbs begin to grow 40 days after planting. After the plants reach 5 centimeters in height and take root well, the containers are brought out into the light. For 15 days, the plants must be kept in a dim soft light in order to slow down the growth of leaves and allow the flower arrow to emerge. It is desirable that the room is relatively humid at this moment.

Water the plants regularly and very carefully, with a watering can without a strainer along the edge of the container, in order to avoid rotting of the bulbs. Large-crowned daffodils prefer open, sunny places for growth, they do not die in the shade, but they bloom weakly and for a short time. The soil for the growth of this species must be fertile and moderately moist; in wetlands, the bulb, as a rule, rots.
