Narcissus (lat. Narcissus) - popular flower culture; bulbous perennial belonging to the Amaryllis family.
Description
Narcissus is a plant with a dense round or ovoid bulb, which reaches 5-6 cm in diameter. The leaves are ribbon-like, of various widths, gray-green. Peduncles are quite long, up to half a meter, end with a few-flowered and umbellate inflorescences or single flowers.
The flowers are incredibly beautiful, up to 12 cm in diameter, equipped with a corolla perianth, consisting of petals that have a simple shape, there are also double forms. The flowers are fragrant and attract the attention of bees. Fruits in the form of three-celled capsules with a large number of spherical seeds. Daffodils are actively cultivated by both Russian and European gardeners.
The subtleties of growing
Narcissus is an unpretentious culture, it grows excellently in the shade, in the open sun. Negatively refers to damp soils and lowlands with stagnant melt water. An excess of moisture, as a rule, leads to rotting of the bulbs, and subsequently to the complete death of the entire plant.
Narcissus prefers moderately moist, nutritious, sandy and well-drained soils with neutral pH. It is important to add humus and mineral fertilizers to the soil before planting, for which the plants will be thanked with abundant flowering. Culture does not like areas not protected from cold winds.
Reproduction and planting features
The culture in question is propagated by seeds, bulbs and children. The bulbs are planted in the fall, it is important to be in time before the onset of cold weather, otherwise the material will not have time to acquire roots. The roots of the bulbs are formed in about three weeks, but if the material was planted late, the areas are insulated with sawdust or peat. This procedure will prevent the bulbs from freezing.
Before planting, the site is dug to a depth of 18-20 cm, compost or humus is added to the soil, feeding with fresh manure should not be carried out. The bulbs are inspected before planting, rotted specimens are removed. The planting depth depends entirely on the size of the bulbs, as well as the structure of the soil. The distance between the plants should be about 12 cm, and between the rows - 50 cm.
Care procedures
Throughout the growing season, the plant needs regular weeding, feeding and watering. Top dressing is carried out twice a season. The first is carried out in early spring with potash, nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, the second - at the time of bud formation with potassium fertilizers. You need to be careful with nitrogen fertilizers, since their excess threatens to damage the bulbs of daffodils with fungi.
Weeds are weeded as needed, and watering only during prolonged drought. In the northern regions, the Urals and Siberia, plants are insulated for the winter with special covering materials, peat or sawdust. The bulbs are dug every three years, although groups of plants can develop well and bloom profusely for up to five years.
Extraction of bulbs and storage
The daffodil bulbs are excavated after all the leaves have withered. The bulbs are dried for three weeks under a canopy or in room conditions at a temperature of at least 18-20C. Then the planting material frees the ground, removes old roots and separates the children. Store the bulbs in boxes or paper bags in the house at a temperature not exceeding 17C. Air humidity plays an important role - its level should not be higher than 70-75%.
Use in the garden
Narcissus is one of the most popular flowers used in gardening gardens. The culture is used to form a wide variety of flower beds, including the design of flower beds, flower beds, mixborders, mono flower beds.
Daffodils look great on the banks of water bodies. They blend perfectly with other bulbous crops such as tulips. Daffodils are also good in bouquets.
