Characteristics of culture
Viburnum lily - a large deciduous shrub with a spreading crown or a short tree up to 5 m high. Branches are glabrous, dark brown, horizontally spaced. Young shoots are reddish, later green. The buds are reddish, pubescent, shortly pointed.
Leaves are simple, dark green, ovoid, elliptical or broadly elliptical, up to 8 cm long, sharp at the tip, with a wedge-shaped or rounded base, finely serrated along the edge, glabrous, shiny, sitting on petioles, outwardly resembling plum leaves. In the fall, the foliage turns crimson-red, which makes it possible to use the plants in autumn flower gardens or autochildren.
The flowers are small, snow-white, collected in corymbose inflorescences, reaching 7-10 cm in diameter. Fruits are round or oval, up to 12 mm in diameter, blue-black with a bluish bloom, edible. Viburnum lily blooms in April-May for 10 days, the fruits ripen in September. The species under consideration begins to bear fruit in the eighth year after planting, and then bears fruit annually and abundantly.
To date, there is a decorative form of Viburnum x jackii, it is a hybrid obtained by crossing with Canadian viburnum. It is a winter-hardy species. Good seed germination is not characterized. The rooting rate of green cuttings is excellent and reaches 80-85%. It differs from other species in its rapid growth. The average life expectancy is 70-80 years.
The subtleties of growing
Viburnum salivary prefers slightly alkaline, neutral or slightly acidic soils, the soil composition does not matter. Although the culture feels defective on waterlogged, heavy clayey, compacted, saline and waterlogged soils. The location, as for other representatives of the genus, is preferably sunny or semi-shaded. In open areas, plants bloom more abundantly and, accordingly, give good fruit yields.
Viburnum is propagated by seed method and cuttings (green and lignified cuttings). In the first method, the seeds need a two-stage stratification. The sowing depth is 2-2.5 cm. Stratified seeds can be sown both in open ground and in pots, which are first kept at room temperature and transferred to the basement for the winter. Strengthened seedlings are planted in a permanent place no earlier than 2-3 years later. It is important to provide young plants with regular watering and fertilizing with mineral fertilizers.

Viburnum lily, along with its relatives, is widely used in folk medicine. Its fruits contain arbutin, flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, saponins, etc. Preparations made on the basis of the fruits of the plant in question are effective during menstrual pain and menopause. They are also applicable for other female diseases. Long-term use of the fruits of viburnum, tinctures and preparations from it, does not cause addiction and allergic reactions.
