Doronicum oriental (lat. Doronicum orientale) Is a flowering plant belonging to the genus Doronicum of the Asteraceae family. Other names for the species are Caucasian doronicum, or heart-shaped (Doronicum caucasicum, Doronicum pardalianches). Under natural conditions, the species in question is found in the Caucasus, some European countries and Asia Minor. The species is widespread, and is very popular among Russian gardeners. It is used for landscaping large city gardens and parks.
Characteristics of culture
Eastern Doronicum is represented by perennial herbaceous plants, not exceeding 60 cm in height and bearing two types of leaves. Stem foliage is elliptical or ovoid, sessile; basal - petiolate, serrated, round or ovoid, has a light green color. The inflorescences of the eastern doronicum, like all representatives of the Asteraceae family, are in the form of baskets, consisting of tubular (disc) and reed (marginal) flowers. The diameter of the baskets is about 4-5 cm, they sit on long peduncles, both types of flowers are yellow.
Flowering of Caucasian doronicum is observed in the second decade of May, sometimes later, lasts about 1-1.5 months. Fruiting is annual, but it cannot be called abundant. At the end of June, the eastern doronicum loses its decorative properties, as the leaves wither and fall off. Experienced florists and gardeners recommend using the plant in alliance with other crops that will cover completely unattractive doronicums.
To date, several varieties of Doronicum Caucasian, or Eastern, have been bred. All of them conquer with bright and abundant flowering. Of the varieties presented on the garden market, it should be noted: Spring Beauty variety - it is characterized by plants reaching a height of 40-45 cm, above which flower stalks, carrying terry rich yellow baskets, rise; Little Leo is a relatively new variety obtained by American breeders, represented by compact, low-growing bushes with yellow inflorescences.
Growing conditions
Doronicum oriental in nature grows in open and shady areas with moist soil, respectively, for successful cultivation in the garden, conditions should be similar. It is preferable to plant eastern doronicum in areas with light shading, it is possible to plant on a site near shrubs and trees with an openwork crown. Full shade for doronicum is undesirable, because without sunlight, plants will stagnate and bloom poorly.
It is not recommended to plant a crop in areas with clay, heavy, highly acidic, waterlogged and saline soils. Slightly acidic, light, light and fertilized soils are suitable. On such sites, plants will show their true beauty - the greens will be more saturated and juicy, and the inflorescences will be large and numerous. Although this is not the only condition for successful cultivation, for example, constant rains and cloudy weather can kill the plants.
Use in the garden
As already mentioned, the eastern doronicum is decorative only during flowering. After its completion, the leaves of the plant die off. To hide the voids, it is advisable to plant doronicum in alliance with ornamental plants with beautiful and lush foliage, such as hosts (more precisely variegated forms). It is not forbidden to combine the culture with irises, tulips, daffodils and other spring-flowering crops. Doronicum oriental will perfectly fit into any flower beds, including mixborders, alpine slides and rockeries. They also look good on the lawn (both singly and in groups).
Breeding features
Eastern Doronicum is a perennial culture, in the same place it can grow for many years. However, gardeners recommend dividing the bushes every three years, thereby rejuvenating them and tidying up the flower garden. There is nothing complicated in this procedure; it is carried out in the fall or early spring. Also, the culture is propagated by seeds. Sowing is carried out directly into the ground. You can sow doronicum for seedlings, so the plants will bloom faster. To obtain seedlings, seeds are sown in mid-April, in the ground - in early - mid-May. Timing varies by climate zone.
