May is the last month of spring. It would seem that everything has already been done in the garden: the trees have been whitewashed, the roses have been excavated, the plants have been planted. So, you can rest. But it was not there. A lot of urgent work awaits us in May. What do we do?
Firstly, clean up the lawn. Now is the time to pick up a rake and carefully process the lawn with it, "combing out" the old grass, leaves and other debris. It is advisable to burn all garbage, and not put it in compost. Thus, you will prevent the multiplication of various pests.
After processing the lawn with a rake, carefully inspect it, if you find empty areas - bald spots, then add a mixture of soil with seeds there in order to plant this piece of lawn in a new way.
Also, now is the time to aerate the lawn, this is done in order to open air access to the roots and prevent moisture stagnation on the lawn. Aeration can be done manually or with a special tool. What is the essence of this operation? Using a special garden rake or a special tool, the soil is punctured to a certain depth.
And the last operation with the lawn is its mowing. If the grass reaches 10 centimeters tall, the lawn is ready to mow. Use a special lawn mower trimmer to tidy it up by immediately removing the cut grass from the area.
Secondly, carefully loosen all the trunks near the garden and ornamental trees, apply mineral fertilizers and sanitary pruning of trees and shrubs, if for some reason you did not have time to carry out this operation in April. First, remove the largest damaged or diseased branches, then move on to the thinner and smaller ones. If there are no sick and damaged branches, then proceed to the next stage - to the formation of the crown and its thinning.
After completing this simple, but rather laborious operation, burn all the cut branches.
Thirdly, treat all plants on the site with special insecticidal agents. It is desirable to carry out this operation in two stages: the first - at the beginning of May, the second - at the end of the month. This is done in order to protect the plants in the garden from pests that hibernate under the bark and in the bark of trees and their clutches. Such an operation helps well against leaf rollers, various aphids, ticks, honeydew, and also apple moth.
It is also advisable to cultivate the soil in the near-trunk circles, but this is done at your discretion.
Fourth, if it was still cool for you, and you have not removed various covering material from the plants, then it is high time to do this, since even the most thermophilic plants no longer need shelter.
Fifth, plant seedlings of various annual plants on the flower beds in advance (grown independently or purchased at any suburban store). First of all, we "move" daisies, pansies, asters, marigolds to open ground. There will no longer be such a cold snap that can destroy them. Until the end of May, you need to plant all flower seedlings in open ground.
At sixth, conduct a thorough watering of the plants in your area: bushes, trees, lawns, flower beds. Watering is especially good after applying mineral fertilizers.
Also in May, you can transplant or plant shrubs, if for some reason you could not do this in the fall. At temperatures up to 20 degrees Celsius, these plants take root quite easily and quickly, the main thing is to water them on time.
That's the whole list of the main works on a summer cottage or a personal plot in May, with the exception of planting various vegetable crops in the beds. But the timing of their planting depends on specific regions.
