Many have probably watched the film about black mold, terrifying an unforgiving enemy that only hot flames can handle. But then I came across on the Internet a description of a modest plant, which, according to the authors, is capable of completely suppressing the growth of black mold. The plant is not very popular with amateur gardeners because of the appearance of the flowers. They look like modern pop singers with tufts of hair sticking out in different directions, looking at which, you think, either he was late and did not have time to comb his hair, or with a big hangover, or they have such a fashion - the more disheveled, the cooler
Plant habit *
The tetrahedral straight or branched stems of a perennial plant rise above the ground to a height of 1 meter. The oblong-lanceolate simple leaves of monarda have a scalloped edge and resemble mint leaves. They are mint-like and have a scent.
Small flowers with different colors are collected in inflorescences, capitate or racemose. The shape of the flowers is tubular-funnel-shaped. Narrow pointed petals with white, yellow, purple, red color stick out around the convex core, giving the whole flower the appearance of a disheveled head. From the flowers comes a mint-lemon perfume that collects bees. Monarda is an excellent honey plant, decorated with flowers from July to September. The fruit of the plant is a nut.
Growing and caring
Pros of growing monarda:
* a perennial plant that saves the gardener's time;
* tolerates winter frosts;
* unpretentious in care;
* any garden land will suit, but it is desirable to retain moisture, since the monarda is moisture-loving;
* can grow in a place exposed to sunlight, but it will easily tolerate partial shade.
Once every three to four years, you can propagate the monarda by dividing the rhizome. Peat or compost is introduced into the groove for the new planting site. Loves abundant watering.
Varieties
* Double monard - has a long horizontal rhizome. Oval light green leaves on short petioles protrude from reddish stipules, located oppositely on a tetrahedral erect stem. The stem height reaches 80 centimeters. Violet or lilac small flowers form a capitate inflorescence up to 6 centimeters in diameter.
* Monard tubular (fisty) is a spicy-aromatic plant cultivated in European countries, with a stem height of 65 to 120 centimeters. There is a dwarf form of tubular monarda with a stem height of 10 to 35 centimeters. In Russia, such a dwarf is represented by the "Victoria" variety.
Simple leaves with a serrated edge are covered with fine hairs. Small lilac flowers form spherical heads, crowning the ends of the shoots. One stem adorns from 5 to 9 such heads. And each inflorescence has up to three hundred flowers.
* Monarda hybrid - has many varieties. Among them are such as:
- Monarda hybrida "Schneewittchen", available in varieties ranging from white and pink to purple and burgundy.
- Monarda hybrida "Pink Prinzes", represented by varieties "Blaustrumpf", "Praerienacht", "Squaw", "Pawnee". The plants are tall, of all kinds of colors.
Usage
Monarda is usually used in mixborders ** or in small flower beds. Being shade-tolerant, it will decorate the shaded area of the cottage. In cut, it looks great both in a bouquet of fresh flowers and in a winter bouquet of dried flowers.
Many people grow monarda as a spice, adding leaves to tea, salads, marinades to give them a mint-lemon aroma. Monarda sprigs in pickles and marinades will prevent spoilage.
The plant is also used for medicinal purposes, as an antiseptic. Infusion rinse the inflamed oral cavity, a sore tooth; disinfect and heal wounds and skin infections; calms headache; strengthen the immune system.
The most
the main value of monarda is its ability to suppress the growth of black mold. For this, an essential oil is prepared from it.
Note:
* Habitus - the appearance of the plant.
** Mixborder - this is a mixed harmonious border, an elongated planting, made up of different plants. It is not easy to do it without experience and certain knowledge. If you wish, you can use ready-made schemes from magazines and books on landscape design.
