In February, many summer residents and gardeners no longer find a place for themselves - their hands are asking to take up the seeds and start growing seedlings. What kind of vegetables can you start sowing so that the seedlings do not overgrow? The first in line are the nightshades - eggplants and peppers. In the last decade of February, a favorable time for sowing seeds is already coming. But you shouldn't rush with tomatoes. Although there are exceptions - some varieties of tomatoes are still recommended to be sown in February

Sowing rules for eggplant

Eggplant is one of the more capricious vegetables. This is a southern culture. But even in the middle lane, when favorable conditions are created, it is possible to get a generous harvest.

In order to have time to get ripe fruits in a short summer, it is recommended to choose varieties with an early ripening period. That is, those in which the duration of the growth period is no more than 120 days.

And you should also pay attention to the characteristics of the variety. It is better not to be greedy and opt for the average size of the fruit. Then the chances of having time to harvest before the arrival of sudden cold weather increases.

Sowing of seeds begins at the end of February. But if we didn’t have time for this, then it will not be too late to do it in the first ten days of March. Planting eggplant seedlings in the ground is carried out at the age of 60-65 days. It is from this date that you need to build on in order to calculate the exact time of sowing seeds for seedlings. By this time, buds may even appear on the seedlings. It's not scary, you shouldn't rush to disembark because of this.

Before you start sowing, you should prepare the seeds. It is recommended to warm up the seed first. And then treat with growth stimulants and disinfect. This procedure can be carried out simultaneously with the soaking of the seeds.

Soaked seeds germinate faster and germinate more amicably. But you need to soak correctly. If you just leave the seed in a jar of water, it will destroy the seeds, because they "suffocate". It is necessary that they were in a humid environment, but at the same time there was an air exchange. So just wrap them in a damp cloth, place them on a saucer and cover with a bag. When the seeds are swollen, you can start sowing.

Conventionally, vegetable crops that are grown through seedlings can be divided into two types: those who like picking and those who do not benefit from it. Eggplants belong to the second group. Based on this, when sowing seedlings, you need to choose such containers so that you do not have to transplant seedlings soon. Because it is not well tolerated by eggplants.

The seeds do not need to be immersed deeply in the soil mixture. They are simply laid out on the surface, then sprinkled with earth and sprayed with water from a spray bottle. After that, cover the "bed" with a bag and leave in a warm place. And as soon as the first sprout appears, you need to immediately move the crops closer to the light so that the seedlings do not stretch out and do not hurt.

Features of sowing vegetable pepper

Vegetable peppers grow faster than eggplant. And in temperate climates, you can choose varieties with both early and medium ripening. Otherwise, sowing pepper seeds for seedlings is not much different from eggplant. They also need to be soaked so that the seed swells and bites. And then distribute one by one into cassette containers or other container for seedlings. Like eggplant, peppers don't like picking.

Sowing tomatoes in February

It is recommended to sow tomatoes for seedlings in March. But there are exceptions to this rule - these are large-fruited and indeterminate tomatoes.

In February, it is already possible to sow BIF class tomatoes for seedlings, that is, meat or large-fruited. They are easy to recognize by the name of the variety. For example - Bull heart and the like, with almost half a kilogram of fruits. They can also be recognized by the prefix "Biff".

Indeterminate varieties are interesting in that their fruits ripen in whole bunches. And they can be grown in a limited area. But these tomatoes have medium and late ripening periods. Therefore, sowing is carried out earlier than usual.
