The question often arises among amateur flower growers: is it necessary to dig up tulips every year, once every 5 years, or not to touch them at all. Let's talk about the timing of the collection of bulbs, storage rules, planting time and tulips that do not need to be dug up
How tulips grow
The quality of the bud depends on the condition of the bulb, which gains strength in the process of development and maturation. It depends on compliance with the rules of agricultural technology, timely cutting of flowers, soil condition, temperature regime. Bulbous plants require special care: many species need to be dug up and planted at certain times.
A feature of the growth of bulbs is their tendency to deepen. This happens during development: after flowering, the onion begins to multiply, in the lower part it forms mini-onions / babies. After replanting, they will grow and in a year will release a peduncle.
Deepening is noticeable even in one season. If tulips are not dug for 5 years, then the bulbs will go to a depth of less than 20 cm. It is difficult for young sprouts to break through such a layer of earth, the spring flower bed will become empty, the children will rot.
Dig up tulips or not
Digging tulips for the summer or leaving them in the ground is a controversy for many gardeners. Many argue that they grow in one place for 10 years and bloom beautifully. Others say that flowering worsens or stops after 3 years of inactivity. Let's figure out what's the matter.
Having a flower garden with tulips on the site, you need to know the planted varieties and understand their classifications and characteristics. Of the 15 existing groups, one class stands out - simple early ones.
A feature of these plants is their short stature. The height of the peduncle does not exceed 40 cm, the buds are red, yellow and have a classic shape. Simple early tulips grow and bloom without digging. Bulbs are removed only for treatment against diseases and, if desired, propagate / plant in other places.
If you have tulips of a different class (hybrid, parrot, lily-colored, terry, etc.), they must be dug out. If this agrotechnical measure is violated, after a couple of years, degeneration, shrinking, loss of varietal qualities occurs.
All exotic / varietal species are not only beautiful, but also capricious. Their bulbs often suffer from bacterial infections and fungi. After the end of flowering, the bulbs are always removed from the ground for disinfection and ripening. I will name 3 more reasons for annual excavations.
1. A flowering bulb forms several children, which will grow up in the next season, and in the second year they will bloom fully.
2. Outside the ground, the onion begins a dormant stage, during this period the flower stalk is laid. This process takes place only in warmth (not less than +25), there is no such temperature in the ground.
3. Eliminate natural deepening and thickening of plantings. The formed children left in the ground next year will sprout up and in one place it will be cramped for them. A bunch of sprouts will not receive space for development, they will not have enough food and sunlight.
Bulb baskets are used to facilitate digging. With their help, all planting material is easily extracted. The bulbs are not injured, small children are not lost in the ground.
How and when to dig tulips
The beginning of action is determined by the state of the left sheet. It turns yellow / brightens, loses its juiciness, lays down on the ground, the peduncle dries up. In the middle lane, this occurs in July (mid-end). Late, early varieties are harvested at different times, this is noticeable in the aboveground part.
For work, it is advisable to use a pitchfork, they reduce the likelihood of cutting the onions. To remove them, they must be placed vertically next to the sheet. The excavated material is laid out in a ventilated place along with the stem and left for 10-15 days.
After drying, the tops are removed, the onions are separated from the roots, from the exfoliated husk. Cut patients are rejected, sorted by size and sent to a dry room before planting. In the presence of different varieties, containers with planting material are marked.

To Dig Or Not To Dig?
Does it make sense to dig the soil in the fall if the main planting work in the garden falls on the spring? On a cultivated site, annual deep tillage is not so necessary. But when you just became the owner of a country house with adjoining hundred square meters, it is recommended to start the development of the site with digging the soil in the fall
