Residents of the romantic and mysterious tropics - the vines, which served as a vehicle for the agile Mowgli, came from the pages of books with fascinating adventures to our Russian gardens. They are used to decorate the facades of houses; cozy gazebos in the back of the garden; pergolas guarding the gates and gates; palisades; divide the territory into functional zones. Having changed the halo of its habitat, clematis needs our attention and good care
Love for the sun
Clematis are not alien to the love of the sun. They grow so quickly that they are accustomed to their growth to make their way to the sun in the thickets of the tropical jungle.
The shoots along the southeastern wall of my house branch out more densely and delight with an abundance of large purple-blue flowers all summer long. But on the pergola, standing on the lawn on the other side of the house, that is, facing the north-west, exactly the same variety is shorter, with smaller flowers. Of course, for those living in the hot south, where sweat runs down the face and body in three streams even in the shade, it is better to shade the clematis shoots.
Demanding soil and moisture
Clematis has "moderate" requirements for soils: loamy or sandy loam fertile soil enriched with humus is good for it. The soil is loose, which is what the liana requires. The acidity of the soil should also be moderate: from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline, that is, with a pH of 6, 5 to 7, 5.
It is necessary to provide for a high-quality outflow of water from the spring melting of snow in order to prevent its stagnation, which acts deadly on the roots of the plant. But during growth, vines require abundant watering.
The choice of planting material
When choosing planting material in a store or in the market, be extremely careful. The roots of the seedlings should not have visible damage. They should be firm, not accompanied by bulges or bulges. When buying seedlings in the spring, they must have at least one fresh shoot. When purchasing planting material in the fall, developed vegetative buds should be observed on it.
Planting clematis
Planting clematis is a very crucial moment in the life of a vine and your summer cottage. Saving time and effort in the future depends on how well you do it. After all, clematis can live well in one place for more than twenty years.
Having decided on the landing site, we dig a trench (or separate holes for a single planting) sixty centimeters wide and deep. We carefully clean the removed soil from weeds. Prepare the soil for planting in an old aluminum baby bath or another not high, but roomy container. Add two buckets of compost or humus to one bucket of soil removed from the trench; a bucket of sand; a bucket of peat; one hundred grams of superphosphate and bone meal; two hundred grams of mineral fertilizer, chalk or lime, wood ash. Mix the resulting mixture and fill the trench with it. To create better drainage, you can pour crushed stone, broken brick or empty cans at the bottom of the trench, thereby clearing the area of interfering rubbish.
We do not immediately pour the prepared soil into the hole. First, we fill it only half, we compact it, we make a mound in the middle of the hole. On it, carefully straightening each root, we seat the planting material. We gradually add the soil, deepening the roots so that the vegetative buds are under the soil, and not on the surface or above it. Such a planting contributes to the formation of a tillering center, where new buds are laid, giving birth to new shoots. A deep planting will protect the roots of the plant, which means the plant itself from frost in winter and heat in summer.
Once again we compact the soil, water abundantly, mulch - the planting is completed successfully.
