Iris garden is a perennial plant, with regard to the mechanical composition of the soil, this plant prefers light soils and loams. The plant is also known as hybrid iris.
Reproduction of iris garden
Iris garden reproduces by dividing the bush. In addition, vegetative propagation by dividing rhizomes is also possible. In this case, the optimal time is considered to be the implementation of this reproduction in the period of two to three weeks after the end of flowering, however, such a division of rhizomes can be performed until the end of the summer season.
There should be two or three links and the same number of buds on the division. The leaves should be cut to a height of about fifteen centimeters, and the roots should be shortened ten centimeters. In the event that there is a lack of planting material, then reproduction can be carried out using the buds, which are located on the rhizomes themselves. In this case, the planting depth of the plant should be approximately at the level of the soil, and for light sandy soils it is recommended to make such a depth of about one to two centimeters. It is noteworthy that without dividing these plants can grow even up to five years.
The distance between plants should be about forty to fifty centimeters, but for low-growing plants this value can be twenty-five centimeters.
Winter hardiness
As for the resistance to winter, the garden iris is considered quite resistant to cold weather, however, this does not apply to new varieties of American selection. However, in the winter period of time, flower buds are considered the most vulnerable, which are laid on the rhizomes since autumn. The death of such buds can occur when the temperature drops to minus seven degrees, and in the most winter-resistant varieties, this value will be approximately minus twelve to fourteen degrees Celsius.
Therefore, young plantings should be sheltered for the winter, especially new varieties of American selection. The most optimal covering material seems to be spruce branches, and light soils can be mulched with a layer of earth or peat of about seven to nine centimeters. It is recommended to cover the plants after the first frost, which will dry out the ground.
Possible growing problems
Very often, during growth, plants can close together, so if you plant a plant nearby, then the cuttings should be oriented with a cut of the rhizome in one direction, and in the case when the plant is planted in groups, this orientation should be a cut of the rhizome towards the center.
As for tall and large-flowered varieties, they need protection from the wind. If the moisture is excessive, then the starch-rich tissues near the rhizome can rot. If a high nitrogen content is observed in the soil, then a powerful development of the vegetative mass will occur, which will damage the flowering of the garden iris. Moreover, in this case, resistance to winter will also decrease, as well as resistance to various diseases. Therefore, feeding through organic fertilizers is also considered extremely undesirable. It is also undesirable to feed the plants in the second half of summer, as this can provoke a very abundant growth of such plants during the period when they need to prepare for winter.
As for the color range of this plant, the colors are very diverse: white and yellow, and pink, and blue, and blue, and lilac, and purple, and cream, and even brown. According to the flowering time, those plants are distinguished that will bloom early: from about the end of May to the beginning of June. There are also plants with an average flowering period: this has been happening since the beginning of June. There are also late flowering plants: they begin to bloom from the end of June. There are also such plants that can bloom again, but in Russia such varieties will not bloom a second time.
