Among tropical ficuses, not all are powerful trees with large dark green leaves that shine with gloss. There are also dwarfs among them, which, like tropical vines, twist, clinging to the trunks and branches of trees, or fall like a green waterfall, if there is no suitable support for them nearby
Dwarf ficus
Dwarf ficus (Ficus pumila) occupies a special place among decorative ficuses. It is an evergreen climbing plant with small dark green oval leaves with pointed tips. The length of the leaves is ten times less than the length of the leaves of rubber ficus, that is, equal to 2-3 centimeters.
Long stems cling to the support with aerial roots, which are supplied with thin shoots extending from the stems. Dwarf ficus is excellent for growing as an ampelous plant. Having no support, the stems fall freely, forming a dense dark green decorative cap of small glossy leaves.
The most popular varieties of dwarf ficus:
• Ficus dwarf
"Solar"with small, bubbly, rounded leaves.
• Ficus dwarf
"White sun", the green leaves of which have a creamy white border, more or less clearly distinguished against the main green background.
Ficus varifolia
Ficus diversifolia (Ficus diversifolia) is a medium-sized (30-60 cm high) plant with small rounded leaves. It got its name for the different colors of its leaves. The upper side of the leaves is dark green, while the underside is light green or reddish. Every year, the ficus varifolia presents the owner with decorative small fruits.
Ficus Binnendijka
Ficus binnendijkii (Ficus binnendijkii) - nature created this species for lovers of pointed narrow long leaves. The color of the leaves can be green, like the variety "Ali", or variegated, like the variety "Emstel gold". Ficus is unpretentious to living conditions.
Growing
All of these types of ficuses can be grown indoors, taking them out into the open air during the warm season. The most resistant of these is the dwarf ficus. In areas with a warm climate, it can be grown outdoors as a climbing or ground cover plant.
In indoor conditions, the ficus prefers diffused light, although it also tolerates not very well-lit corners. When grown in open ground, places for the ficus are chosen on the south side, protected from the cold wind.
In summer, ficuses are often watered, reducing the amount of watering in winter. Twice a month in spring and summer, watering is combined with mineral fertilizing, adding 20-30 grams of complex fertilizer to a bucket of water.
Maintaining the appearance of the plant consists in removing damaged branches and leaves.
Reproduction and transplantation
Propagated by cuttings and layering, of which there are many in the spring. Shoots are instilled in, keeping an eye on soil moisture. After the roots appear, they are separated and transplanted to a permanent place. Cuttings for rooting are planted in 10-centimeter cups, which are kept at a temperature of 22 degrees in a humid place.
Once every two years, in the spring, the ficus is transplanted into a larger pot. When the plant reaches a certain size, the transplant is not carried out, but simply part of the soil is renewed.
The best time to buy ficuses in the store is spring.
Diseases and pests
Grape mealybugs provoke yellowing and leaf fall. The worm is removed by hand.
Prolonged exposure of the plant to the rays of the sun also causes yellowing of the leaves.
With an excess of moisture in the soil, roots can rot.
