Vallisneria dwarf (lat. Vallisneria nana) - an aquatic plant; a representative of the Vallisneria genus of the Vodokrasovye family. In nature, the plant is found in the north of Australia. The plant is used for landscaping and decorating aquariums. It is famous for its fast growth and undemandingness.
Characteristics of culture
Vallisneria dwarf is represented by perennial plants with a shortened milky-yellow rhizome, which forms a large number of lateral shoots. The plant does not exceed 60 cm in height, often reaches 30-35 cm. This aspect depends entirely on the conditions of detention. For example, if the location of the aquarium is sunny and the nutrient medium is normal, then the plant will reach its maximum height.
The foliage of Vallisneria dwarf is dark green, narrow, jagged along the edge, rigid, ribbon-like, sometimes drooping, collected in a lush rosette. Compared with other members of the genus, the foliage of this species is narrower. Flowers are divided into two types - staminate and pistillate. The first ones have short pedicels, are collected in bundle-shaped inflorescences, break off from the plant at the time of flowering. The second type of flowers is single, but the moment of flowering does not break away from the peduncle, but rise above the water for pollination, and then sink into the water.
Features of the content
As already mentioned, dwarf Vallisneria can hardly be called a whimsical culture. It is ideal for landscaping and decorating small to medium sized aquariums. It is recommended to plant it in the background of the aquarium, or in small islands in the center.
If we compare dwarf Vallisneria with other representatives of the genus, then it is more light-loving. She needs a lot of sun to develop, as she has a long growth phase. The optimum temperature for culture development is 25-30C. Low temperatures harm plants, they often die in cold water, still, one has only to remember its natural habitat
All types of Vallisneria, including dwarf ones, are famous for their filter function, they produce oxygen and at the same time neutralize harmful substances, for example, nitrites, nitrogenous compounds. The only thing they don't like is the presence of a large amount of copper and rust in the water.
Although dwarf vallisneria cannot boast of being tall, it needs pruning the moment the plant reaches the surface of the water. Also, if the plant is too dense, it is recommended to carry out thinning to open it to the sun.
Vallisneria dwarf propagated vegetatively. At the base of the mother plant, baby antennae are formed, from which a daughter plant is soon formed. It develops rapidly and forms a whole string. It's hard to believe, but over 50 daughter plants are formed in a year. It is recommended to separate daughter plants from the mother bush when at least 3-4 leaves appear on it.
