Biological features

Distribution of species
In floriculture, 2 types of Jeffersonia are grown:
• double-leaf;
• questionable.
The second option grows in our country in the Far East. Introduced into culture at the dawn of the 20th century by the St. Petersburg Garden.
Unpretentious care. It winters well in most regions of Russia, it is not very common in amateur collections.
The first option is practically unknown to Russian gardeners. Difficulties are associated with plant reproduction.
Reproduction
The seed process is immediately excluded. Bolls rarely ripen. Small grains have an underdeveloped embryo. Germinate slowly, with difficulty under favorable conditions. Self-seeding in flower beds is practically not observed.
Dividing a bush is the only acceptable breeding method for a crop. In the spring, the bushes disturb in rare cases after the snow melts. The main transplant period is at the end of August.
In well-developed plants, a division with 4 replacement buds is cut off, with a powerful root part without digging out the mother liquor. Too small bushes take root poorly, bloom poorly, grow for a long time.
They are planted in a permanent place. In dry autumn, they are often watered. Late plantings are covered with spruce branches or covered with leaf litter. Shelter is not required in subsequent years.
Culture requirements
The best place to place Jeffersonia is under the canopy of trees. Loves loose, nutritious soil with the addition of sand, humus, peat in a ratio of 1: 2: 1.
It is moisture-loving, but does not tolerate stagnant water, close location of groundwater. In the fall, planting is easy. Blooms next year. It grows slowly around the entire circumference, evenly conquering the space allotted to it.
Planting, leaving
Dig a hole, pour water over it, gently straighten the roots. Sprinkle with earth, compacting the soil around the stem. Twigs are laid out. At first, they monitor soil moisture. In hot weather, shade from the sun.
Caring for Jeffersonia is simple:
• spring removal of last year's foliage;
• watering during drought;
• mulching with humus, peat, straw cutting;
It does not need additional fertilizing, insulation for the winter. For many years it grows in one place, without losing its decorative effect.

It is in perfect harmony with anemone, kandyk, corydalis, liverwort, breakthrough, primrose in the foreground of the flower garden. Similar growing conditions, simultaneous flowering, further growth of leaves, hides empty spaces from ephemerals.
