Mint creates curtains in the garden thanks to its powerful root system, gradually mastering new territories. Over time, there is a desire to increase the amount of planting material, to acquire a new variety. What breeding methods are applicable for a fragrant beauty?
Breeding types
Mint bushes reproduce in several ways:
• vegetative (cuttings, division of rhizomes);
• seed.
For successful cultivation, you need to know the intricacies of each method.
Seed method
The most laborious option for obtaining young specimens, requiring patience from the gardener. It is used for varieties. Not suitable for hybrids (most rarely set seeds). The percentage of repetition of hereditary properties is not great.
In early spring, a mixture of humus (peat), sand, garden soil in a ratio of 2: 1: 1 is prepared at home. A hole is drilled in the container to drain excess moisture. Fill with earth. Grooves are cut with a depth of 5 mm, after 3 cm.
Spill with potassium permanganate solution. Spread the seeds evenly. Sprinkle with soil, compact by hand. The containers are placed in a plastic bag. Installed on the window, closer to the battery.
Germination time is not uniform from 1 to 2 weeks. When shoots appear, the containers are transferred to a cooler place to prevent them from being pulled out. The crops are aired daily, gradually accustoming the plants to the conditions of the dry air of the room. After 3 weeks, the film is completely removed.
Water it sparingly, as the upper layer of the substrate dries up with a weak solution of potassium permanganate (for the prevention of "black leg"). They are fed twice with Kemira Lux complex fertilizer.
In May, the "young" are taken out into the street, leaving for a day in the shade of trees. Gradually accustoming plants to open air conditions, light intensity.
Cuttings
In the middle of summer, they begin to cuttings. Cut twigs 6-8 cm long. Put in a glass of water. A good root system is formed in a month. They are planted in a permanent place. The first time is covered with a cut bottle with an open lid. After 3 weeks, the shelter is removed.
You can plant cuttings directly on the seedling beds. Freshly cut twigs are dipped in root powder. Shake off excess "powder". On fertilized, loose soil in partial shade, grooves are cut every 10 cm.
Plants are planted at intervals of 5 cm from each other. Spill water, compact the soil around the stem. Cover the bed with a film through the arcs. Shade from above with non-woven material.
Water the plantings every two weeks. A month later, they are fed the complex fertilizer "Zdraven". By the end of summer, mint is ready for transplanting into open ground.
Dividing the bush
The renewal procedure is carried out at the age of four. In early spring, they dig up the bushes completely, freeing them from the earthen coma. Divided into segments with 2-3 growth buds. Planted immediately to a permanent place.
