Aponogeton Abyssinian is a rather interesting amphibian plant that lives in water bodies located in East Africa. These are mainly the reservoirs of Zaire, Ethiopia and Malawi. Sometimes the Abyssinian aponogeton also lives in temporarily existing reservoirs located at an altitude of three thousand meters above sea level. This handsome amphibian grows well in aquariums, emphasizing their unique design. And it is best to plant it in the foreground or in the central part
Getting to know the plant
Aponogeton Abyssinian is endowed with tuberous rhizomes reaching two and a half centimeters in thickness, which sometimes can be somewhat elongated.
The underwater leaves of this handsome amphibian gradually change their shape as they grow. Initially, they are usually ribbon-like, and after some time they change to obovate and lanceolate. The length of the leaves of an amazing aquatic inhabitant usually reaches eight and a half, and the width is two and a half centimeters. And his leaf petioles often grow up to ten centimeters in length.
As for the leaf blades of the Abyssinian aponogeton, they can be either pointed or slightly dull. All leaves are scarious and slightly transparent, with narrowed or descending bases.
The floating leaves of the amusing plant are equipped with petioles growing up to half a meter in length. The plates of such leaves are linear or ovoid, less often - heart-shaped. Their length is on average sixteen centimeters, and the leaves grow up to five centimeters wide. And the leathery petioles of the above-water leaves of the Abyssinian aponogeton are somewhat shorter.
Faceted peduncles of a kind of aquatic beauty grow to about forty-five centimeters. Their color can range from rich reds to calm greens. There are usually six stamens in an amphibian plant. The length of the inflorescences reaches five centimeters, and the covering leaves are one and a half. Each inflorescence is formed by two spikelets, the length of which ranges from one and a half to five centimeters. Small pretty flowers of the Abyssinian aponogeton are characterized by a circular arrangement on the inflorescences.
Each fruit of the bizarre plant contains seven to ten double-coated seeds.
How to grow
Abyssinian aponogeton is grown in loose soil, characterized by the content of a solid amount of all kinds of nutrients. The most optimal in this case will be a soft water environment. It is desirable to maintain the temperature regime in the range from twenty-four to twenty-eight degrees. In the case of high humidity, it is quite possible to keep this handsome amphibian in semi-water (usually in a covered aquarium) or above water.
It is also important to know that in winter, a luxurious aquatic inhabitant is at rest. Due to this feature of the Abyssinian aponogeton, the water temperature in aquariums in winter should be reduced by about two to three degrees. And top dressing with high-quality liquid fertilizers during this period will be very useful to him.
Regarding lighting, we can say that the best option would be medium-intensity lighting with a power of 0.4 to 0.5 W / l. And the daylight hours of this green pet should not be less than eleven to twelve hours.
If possible, the Abyssinian aponogeton should be provided with a fairly low water level. Floating leaves appear quite rarely when grown in aquariums, however, if they do appear, such leaves must be removed. This will allow subsequent leaves to develop short petioles. If the floating leaves are not removed, the plant can stretch very long.
The handsome amphibian reproduces exclusively by seeds. As a rule, seeds germinate very well, however, despite this, young plants need special conditions and constant care. To get luxurious adult bushes, you have to work hard.
