Bolbitis heteroclite, also called bizarre bolbitis, lives in nature in the reservoirs of New Guinea, Japan, India and a number of Asian countries. Most often, it grows on the soil surface, but sometimes it can also be found in rivers with a fast flow. Heteroclite bolbitis grows especially well in humid forests at the base of tree trunks, as well as in rocky areas. But for keeping in aquarium conditions, this aquatic beauty is not very suitable. However, if desired, it is quite possible to grow it in aquariums, to which heteroclite bolbitis will certainly give an aesthetic and unique look

Getting to know the plant

Bolbitis heteroclite is a luxurious amphibian fern endowed with creeping rhizomes covered with brownish scales, which are about seven millimeters wide and about fifteen centimeters long. In general, the height of this aquatic beauty reaches twenty-five centimeters, and the average width of its bizarre bushes is fifteen centimeters.

Sterile leaf blades of heteroclite bolbitis grow in length up to twenty-five centimeters, and in width - up to seventeen. They can be either simple or pinnate. And the leaves of the moisture-loving handsome man are either sessile or equipped with short petioles. Moreover, they can be narrow-ovate, elongated-pointed, or whole-edged. Located opposite and alternately, the leaves reach a width of five centimeters, and a length of ten. Their edges are spongy or crenate, and their color can vary from light to dark green shades.

Fertile leaflets in heteroclite bolbitis are extremely rare. Sporangia are usually evenly and densely distributed on their dorsal sides.

How to grow

For growing in aquariums, bolbitis heteroclita is not the most suitable option. However, it is quite possible to grow it in an aquarium. For this, water is needed soft, with an acidic reaction. And the best temperature regime for keeping this handsome man will be a temperature in the range from twenty to twenty-five degrees.

Since the rhizomes of the heteroclite bolbitis are not able to take root in the soil, they are usually fixed manually on a wide variety of decorative elements like pebbles, snags, etc. six months.

Heteroclite bolbitis will need very moderate lighting, this amphibian fern does not like direct sunlight. And fluorescent lamps will be the most optimal source of artificial lighting for him. It is better to choose such lamps of the LB type, with a power from 0.2 to 0.3 W / l.

A bizarre amphibian fern reproduces by dividing rhizomes - as a rule, this process does not cause much difficulty.

The most optimal option for keeping bolbitis heteroclite is its cultivation in paludariums. This handsome man reacts extremely positively to wet soil. A greasy, moist soil will work best for him. However, its rhizomes should never be immersed in the substrate - they must be on top. The ideal substrate for heteroclite bolbitis is peat or sphagnum. Often, additional plants can form near the tops of the leaves - as a rule, this can be observed at a rather high humidity of the air environment. And the best temperature for growing this bizarre fern is between 26 and 30 degrees.

The growth rate of heteroclite bolbitis is rather slow, and it is very unpretentious in care. When it comes to placing it in aquariums, the background works best.
