Abyssinian gooseberry (lat. Dovyalis abyssinica Warb.) - fruit crop from the Willow family.

Description

The Abyssinian gooseberry is either an arboreal or a shrub plant that can grow up to nine meters in height. Moreover, it is quite compact. The alternate oblong or ovate-lanceolate leaves of the Abyssinian gooseberry are two to four centimeters wide, and their length can vary from two and a half to nine centimeters. These leaves can be finely toothed or wavy, as well as naked or slightly hairy. All of them are painted in pleasant light green tones and boast a pronounced shine.

The fruits of the Abyssinian gooseberry are slightly flattened from the sides, and their diameter ranges from 1.25 to 2.5 centimeters. The peel of all berries is very delicate and thin, apricot-colored. And their sweet and sour and surprisingly juicy pulp is a little knit and includes a few tiny seeds.

Where grows

The homeland of this gooseberry variety is considered to be the luxurious East African forests, located mainly in Uganda, Ethiopia or Kenya. Moreover, these trees are able to grow at an altitude of 2400 meters above sea level.

Unfortunately, this gooseberry never received wide distribution in culture - this is due to the susceptibility of fruits to damage by worms and various insects.

Application

The fruits of a juicy Abyssinian gooseberry are eaten not only fresh - they make excellent syrups, delicious canned food, rich compotes and excellent aromatic jam.

As for the beneficial properties and composition of such gooseberries, they have not yet been sufficiently studied, but modern scientists are actively working in this direction.

Contraindications

As such, this unusual gooseberry has no contraindications to use, so if you want to feast on these juicy berries, it makes sense to focus only on individual intolerance.

Growing and caring

The Abyssinian gooseberry is endowed with the ability to tolerate minor frosts very well, so it is quite possible to try to grow it even in temperate latitudes. In general, this culture is very unpretentious and does not require any special care.
