It is a pity, of course, that olives do not grow on Ash, but he has enough other attractive qualities that vote for his presence in your garden. A sparse crown and a strong root system withstand strong winds perfectly. Leaves are capable of converting gassed air into healing ones. Young trees quickly gain height. The tree is not afraid of drought and cold weather
Rod Ash
The genus Ash (Fraxinus) from the Olive family unites deciduous trees with thick trunks, the diameter of which can reach one and a half meters. Raising its branches to a height of 30-50 meters above the ground, ash does not worry about its resistance to strong winds. A powerful root system, which does not have a central core, and therefore grows in width and depth, which can help the stability of the tree, help the tree to defeat the rapidity of air currents.
Such a root system distinguishes ash, for example, from spruce, which easily surrenders to hurricanes. In spruce, a taproot first develops, and later a root system is formed, located close to the surface of the earth. The taproot dies off over time, and the superficial roots are not always able to withstand strong winds, allowing it to turn the spruce out of the ground along with its roots.
The elongated ovate crown with odd-pinnate large complex leaves, consisting of 5 to 15 small leaves, depending on the species, freely passes the sun's rays, gently scattering them, creating favorable conditions for planting ornamental plants that came to our region from tropical forests under the trees.
Flowers collected in paniculate inflorescences are often inconspicuous, but in some species they are very attractive and fragrant.
Although Ash is a member of the Olive family, its winged nuts are only suitable for birds.
Varieties
•
Common ash or tall (Fraxinus excelsior) - The straight trunk and rounded crown of this species can be found everywhere. Ornamental varieties have been developed, which are widely used in urban greening. In some species, the leaves are wrinkled and wavy. Even before leaves appear on the branches, fragrant multi-flowered inflorescences bloom. May cause allergies during flowering.
•
Ash white or floral (Fraxinus ornus) - differs in white lush panicles-inflorescences.
•
Pennsylvanian ash or fluffy (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) - good for its winter hardiness and rapid growth, which is what is needed for our territories.
•
Ash lanceolate or green (Fraxinus lanceolata) - like the Pennsylvanian species, it tolerates frosts and quickly gains altitude.
•
Chinese ash (Fraxinus chinensis) - pleases with panicle inflorescences, lush, fragrant, white.
Growing
Without interfering with the sun's rays to warm the growing plants below, Ash himself loves illuminated places, but it can grow in partial shade.
The soil for different species requires different. If a low-fertile soil, including clay or calcareous, suits the Ash flower, then the Ash-tree, although it is also called "ordinary", chooses fertile soils, light or medium loamy.
The trees are winter-hardy, but some species are painfully tolerant of spring frosts.
Only young plantings are watered. With prolonged droughts, mature trees will also be grateful for watering. It will maintain the splendor of the crown and protect plants from pests and diseases.
Planting can be carried out in the spring, but in areas with a cold climate, an autumn planting will be more successful.
Reproduction
Propagated by stratified seeds, cuttings, abundantly growing shoots. Seeds are sown in autumn and wait for shoots for a long time, having determined the containers in an unheated room. For 3 years, the seedlings are periodically transferred into more spacious containers, and then planted in open ground.
Ornamental species are grafted onto the stock of a botanical species, since they are not able to preserve the original properties of the species.
