Nomaphila straight, also called lemongrass, is found naturally in swamps and in stagnant water bodies of the African and Asian tropics and subtropics. The high decorative qualities of this unpretentious beauty make her a welcome guest in aquariums. The wonderful aquatic inhabitant grows equally well throughout the year. She feels no worse in paludariums, and sometimes she can be seen even in humid greenhouses
Getting to know the plant
Straight Nomafila is an incredibly attractive and fast-growing member of the Akantovaya family. Its long, elongated and incredibly strong stems are equipped with medium-sized adventitious roots, and the total height of the wonderful aquatic inhabitant reaches about 40-60 cm.
Simple leaves of this water beauty are opposite. Small petiolate leaf blades grow up to twelve centimeters in length and up to four in width. Above they are usually light green, and below they are whitish green with a slight silvery sheen. And the length of the petioles is about three centimeters. All leaves have only an oblong shape and are distinguished by pointed tops and wedge-shaped bases.
Amusing little blue flowers are formed in the leaf axils of the straight line nomaphila. They always grow above water.
Under particularly favorable conditions, this aquatic beauty is capable of reaching a solid size and can even sometimes peep out of the water.
How to grow
Nomafila straight is ideal for growing in tropical aquariums. The best temperature for full growth will be in the range of twenty-two to twenty-eight degrees. Acidity is desirable in the range of 6, 2 - 7, 8, and hardness - about 5 - 15 degrees. If the water temperature is lower than the recommended one, the leaves of the straight line will begin to shrink, and its growth will immediately slow down. And in too soft water, the destruction of the leaves is often observed, as a result of which only the tops formed by two or three pairs of leaves remain. The water in the aquariums needs to be changed weekly (by about 1/5 or ¼ of the total).
You should try to select the soil that is perfectly silted and very nutritious. If it is new, then a little clay should be added under the roots of the green pets. As for the nature of the substrate, it does not have a decisive value - the root system of the straight nomaphila is quite powerful. It is advisable to lay the soil in the aquarium at least in a layer of five to seven centimeters. All kinds of mineral dressings are not particularly important. Moreover, the wonderful aquatic inhabitant is extremely sensitive to an overabundance of all kinds of chemicals. For example, an excess of sodium ions adversely affects its development. Therefore, it is extremely important to be careful when adding table salt to water or making it alkaline with baking soda.
Nomafila straight - a lover of very strong lighting. Lack of light can provoke the disintegration of its leaves. The light intensity is suitable in the range of 0.4 - 0.5 W / l, and the daylight hours should be at least twelve hours. Illumination from incandescent lamps will also serve well, and natural light will help to significantly improve the growth of a water beauty. In order to save as many old leaves as possible on the stems, it is also advisable to organize side lighting.
Reproduction of nomaphila straight occurs by cuttings. Tiny apical shoots are detached from the strong maternal specimens. And in order to get a new specimen with several lateral shoots at once, you need to keep the root system with parts of the stems in the ground.
It is best to post the nomaphile straight in groups. To speed up its growth, the stems of this green pet should be periodically trimmed. Sometimes it happens that on the underwater parts of the stems of green pets that have reached the water surface, leaves begin to fall off.
In humid greenhouses, as well as when grown in paludariums, nomafil is recommended to first be placed in vessels with a low water level, and after air shoots are formed on it, immediately transplant the water beauty into the ground. Sand and garden soil with the inclusion of clay will be the best soil for it.
