Gomphrena haage (lat. Gomphrena haageana) - herbaceous perennial of the genus Gomfrena of the Amaranth family. In central Russia, just like in European countries, it is grown only as an annual. The birthplace of culture is considered to be North America, to be more precise - Mexico. In the same state, the plant can be found in natural conditions.
Characteristics of culture
Gomfrena Hage is represented by perennial herbaceous plants, not exceeding 30 cm in height. They are characterized by elongated green foliage of small size. The flowers, in turn, are numerous, relatively large (for example, in comparison with the flowers of the popular globular gomphrena (Latin Gomphrena globosa) - native to the tropics), orange or with a golden tint. The flowering of the culture in question is abundant. Fruiting is active. The seeds are very small, but endowed with good germination.
Currently, Gomfrena Hage is involved in breeding work. Nowadays, several interesting varieties can be found in the garden market. Among them, the Leuchtfeuer variety won the love of gardeners and florists. It is characterized by plants up to 45 cm high, crowned with red flowers with an admixture of a shade called scarlet. It should be noted the Strawberry Fields variety. It is famous for its rich red flowers, collected in inflorescences that resemble strawberries in appearance.
Location
Like other representatives of the genus, Gomphrene Hage belongs to the category of light and heat-loving plants, therefore it is recommended to plant it in intensely lit areas, protected from squally and cold winds. Landing on shady and semi-shady areas is highly undesirable. The soil, in turn, is preferable light, loose, neutral, moderately nutritious. Too heavy, clayey, waterlogged and waterlogged soils are unsuitable for cultivation.
Care features
In order for Gomphrena Hage to please with abundant flowering and active growth, it is very important to take care of high-quality and systematic care. It is recommended to water the culture in moderation, special attention should be paid to the procedure during periods of prolonged heat. Plants cannot be poured, otherwise the root system will begin to rot, which, in the end, will lead to death. In addition to moisture, the culture needs regular loosening and removal of weeds, which can take away the lion's share of nutrients.
Top dressing will also have a positive effect on plant health, but you need to be very careful with them, because an overabundance can lead to an active build-up of green mass, but not the formation of flowers. Gomfrena Hage is supportive of pruning. Such an operation provokes the formation of new shoots and, accordingly, numerous new inflorescences. True, if the crop is cultivated in the open field, pruning should not be done too often. This rule applies to a greater extent to specimens grown in hanging pots and garden containers, where it is necessary to control the growth of plants.
Hage does not succumb to diseases and pests of gomphren, but in an unfavorable climate, involving dampness and cold, defeat is quite possible. Most often, the species under consideration overtakes aphids, which suck out the cell sap, thereby weakening the plants and leading to the gradual death of foliage and its deformation. It is not difficult to deal with aphids; it is enough to wash the plants with soap or ash-and-soap solution.
Reproduction
In our latitudes, Gomfren Hage is propagated only by seed. Since the seeds of the culture in question are very small, they are not embedded in the substrate, but only scattered over it and pressed down. By the way, it is necessary to sow seeds in seedling boxes no later than mid-March, otherwise the plants will not have time to bloom. It is worth remembering that the species does not tolerate frequent transplants, therefore, it is recommended to dive once with the appearance of 2 true leaves on the seedlings, using peat pots.
