Spring this year did not please with warmth for long. However, thanks to this, it made it possible for summer residents, who were a little late in sowing, to correct this oversight. In particular, the cool May made it possible to postpone the sowing of carrots closer to the beginning of summer. And it will be useful to remember what methods and techniques exist for this
Presowing preparation of beds and seed
In order for the carrots to turn out delicious, and the root crop is not twisted, the soil for it must be loose and deeply cultivated. The area intended for sowing carrots must be dug up to two depths with a shovel bayonet. Experienced gardeners do not limit themselves to just digging, but even sift the soil so that no foreign body prevents the root crops from taking a beautiful regular shape.
If your site has heavy clay soil, this often leads to cracking of the root crops. This is due to stagnant water on heavy soils. However, their composition can be qualitatively improved by adding sawdust soaked in a solution of urea. For 1 sq. the area of the beds takes approximately 3 kg of wood chips. It is even better to make up a nutritious soil mixture for sowing carrots from peat, needles, sawdust and sand. Then, when planting 1 m of the length of the beds, add 4 glasses of ash.
The general rule for sowing carrots is a temperature of about + 22 ° C. In hotter weather, this is not recommended, since in this case development slows down, and the root crop becomes rough.
To grow carrots, you need to form high beds of about 20 cm. Thanks to this plant, deep cold layers of soil, which have not yet had time to warm up in the spring sun, are not afraid of. In addition, the structure of the soil in such beds will be looser and more breathable.
Carrot seeds contain essential oils that slow down the germination process. To neutralize this effect, the seeds are soaked in warm water or a bubbling procedure is carried out for them. If there is no device for bubbling, the seeds collected in a bag are treated with a stream of hot water.
Sowing carrots
Sowing seeds is carried out on wet soil. Depending on the quality and seedbed preparation, seedlings may appear 1-3 weeks after sowing. Until this moment, it is not worth watering the crops. This can deepen the seed and also lead to a crust. Instead, it is better to loosen the beds. In addition, the beds can be covered with foil to prevent moisture from evaporating from the ground.
After emergence, carrots are thinned as usual. However, this technique is not always beneficial to plants. In a hurry, with inaccurate movements, together with the pulled out plant in the beds, the neighbors left in the garden will also be disturbed. And this can also be the reason that the carrots will have two "legs" on the root vegetable or it will grow crooked.
But you can avoid such a procedure as thinning if you mix the seeds with the used infusion of small-leaf tea before sowing. At the same time, they adhere to the proportion of 1 tsp. seeds for 0.5 cups of tea. You can also use sand instead of tea. And if you add a complex mineral fertilizer to this mixture, the carrots will not require additional feeding during the summer, except for the only watering with herbal infusion based on nettle.
A variety that used to delight with its taste can suddenly disappoint the gardener with a bitter taste. This phenomenon is observed as a result of the activity of the carrot fly. To protect their green pets from the attack of the parasite, marigolds are planted next to the carrot beds.
Another technique that will help in the prevention of diseases and pests of carrots is watering the plantings with the addition of potassium permanganate.
