Perennials such as large-leaved hydrangeas, evergreen rhododendrons, and, of course, roses, need to be cared for before winter arrives. Before the onset of stable frosts, they must be covered. This must be done not only to protect from the cold, but also from burns by the bright winter sun. And how to do it correctly and what other plants are waiting for the attention of the grower?
Mantle for the queen of the garden
Materials such as spruce branches and burlap do an excellent job of sheltering heat-loving flowers. Plant residues can be used. But these materials still deteriorate, and it is advisable to use more durable, moisture-resistant shelters. For these purposes, it is not a good idea to use film. Under such a "veil" the flowers can be supportive. It is better to keep up with the times and use modern non-woven materials. Spunbond is produced in various densities, and you can choose agrofibre for your garden for any need. Despite the fact that it is a synthetic material, its structure allows the plant to "breathe", while protecting it from frost. In addition, the opaque canvas will also protect against bright sunlight.
How to use agrofiber to shelter roses? First of all, the flowers need to be prepared. Varieties with more flexible stems are best lowered to the ground. This should be done gradually, declining the perennial every day lower and lower, helping yourself with brackets. For example, a climbing rose should go through such a procedure. It is better to cut off hybrid tea, as it will be difficult to bend them to the ground. But with ground cover and miniature roses, there will be no unnecessary work - it will be enough to just throw a canvas on them. What else should not be forgotten is to arrange a small mound of sawdust around the root system or to huddle high with earth. Flowers and leaves are cut from the bushes just in front of the shelter.
After carrying out all the preparatory measures over the roses, you need to install a frame on which the agrofibre will be held. These can be arcs from a "snowdrop" type greenhouse, or you can drive pegs along the planting of a flower bed, which will serve as a support for a spunbond. The edges of the canvas can be pressed to the ground with any available materials - logs, stones, or ground. It is not worth picking up the soil with pegs, so as not to violate the integrity of the "blanket". In the same way, you can protect other heat-loving flowers from the winter weather.
So that clematis does not remain without buds
It is very responsible to approach the preparation of clematis for wintering. These vibrant flowers are classified into three groups:
• those that bloom on the shoots of the last year;
• those that form buds on the shoots of the past and current year;
• as well as those in which buds appear on annual shoots.
Pruning before the arrival of winter is done only for the last variety. In this case, the shoots can be cut off completely, leaving near the ground "stumps" about 30 cm high. You can simply cover them with branches or spruce branches. For the rest of the clematis, only the top is cut off, and the rest of the mass is carefully laid on the ground. It is advisable to cover the top with coniferous branches, and only then cover with spunbond.
And if you are late with the landing?
There are such opportunities when the planting material ordered by mail arrives later than planned. And the florist faces a dilemma: whether to engage in planting, if it is noticeably colder, and the deadlines have already passed? Tulips, crocuses, peonies are still best identified in the beds. The ground freezes slowly, and when the air is already frosty outside, the soil can still remain comfortable for planting.
Another tip that in the spring will help flower growers remember where and what plants were placed in the flower beds last year. Many summer residents use pegs with notes or plastic knives on which they sign the flower variety. But under the influence of moisture, such records can "float".
In order not to confuse exactly what was planted and on which bed, mark these places with multi-colored empty plastic cases from old felt-tip pens. For example, yellow ones can be stuck into the ground where tulips are planted, blue ones - crocuses, and red ones - where the peony was transferred.
