In August, the gardener continues to reap the fruits of the intense spring and summer harvest. In the beds where medium-late varieties of cabbage ripen, the time is coming to remove them from the beds. Plants lagging behind in development must be stimulated with dressings. At the same time, one should not lose vigilance in those areas where late representatives of cruciferous plants are located - in the last month of summer, there is still a high probability of causing great damage by gluttonous parasitic pests: cabbage scoop, whites, aphids
Savoy cabbage, white cabbage and red cabbage harvesting
Cabbage of medium late varieties of cabbage varieties is harvested gradually from the beds. The criterion for this is the characteristic density of the heads of cabbage. It is impossible to be late with this work, otherwise the unharvested heads of cabbage will start shooting. In addition, overripe cabbage heads left on the beds often crack.
The type in which the cabbage is sent for storage depends on the timing of the consumption of the heads for food. Vegetables intended for long-term storage do not remove loose leaves. Those that will soon be used for cooking or processing are left with a stump no more than 3 cm long and a couple of tight-fitting green leaves.
Cauliflower dressing
Cauliflower cannot be ignored in August. In those beds where plants are lagging behind, they are fed with ammonium nitrate. Cauliflower seedlings, sown in July, need to be checked for at least 4 leaves, and do not wait until there are more than 6 of them - such specimens are already ready to move for further cultivation in a greenhouse.
Before this, the soil must be shoveled and refilled with cauliflower fertilizers. The greenhouse frame can no longer be used.
Cabbage pest control
You need to be vigilant about the appearance of cabbage whiteworm larvae and scoops on cabbage. White butterflies actively lay their eggs on the underside of cruciferous leaves. This applies not only to cabbage, but also to many other vegetables in your garden: radishes, rutabagas, turnips. A brood of caterpillars gnaw leaves to the very veins. Removing parasites from plants by hand or spraying cabbage will help save you from this scourge.
When the gardener is afraid of treating vegetables with chemical insecticides shortly before harvesting, natural remedies can be used to combat parasites. To do this, use herbal decoctions of wormwood, hot pepper, potato tops, tomatoes.
The dislocation of eggs of the cabbage scoop is the same as that of the white woman. These parasites are dangerous not only because they gnaw the leaves, but also make holes in the head of cabbage, leaving the products of their vital activity inside the vegetable, which makes the cabbage unsuitable for food and subsequently rotts completely. To combat the pest, plants are sprayed with bitoxibacillin or entobacterin (50 g per 10 l of water). You can also use a decoction of insecticide plants that effectively help get rid of cabbage whites.
Cabbage aphids for the entire growing season of cabbage can give more than a dozen generations, so you have to fight it all season. The colonies cover the leaves with the products of their vital activity, which is why the cabbage loses or changes its characteristic color, the leaves get sick and curl. Karbofos against aphids can be applied at least one month before the harvest. If harvest time is approaching, the beds are sprayed three times with an aqueous solution of laundry soap at weekly intervals. Infusions of potato and tomato tops, onion peels, garlic and tobacco will also help.
In the fight against parasites, other insects become human companions. So, the presence of a ladybug on the site will help to exterminate aphids. However, in order to enlist such support from nature, your garden must become attractive to this insect. First of all, it is necessary to limit the use of chemicals in the beds. It is also helpful to grow early flowering plants. Planting dill and buckwheat in your garden will become attractive to the ladybug. The insect is not indifferent to angelica, tansy, dandelion.
