Veronica key grows mainly along the banks of various reservoirs, mainly flowing. It can often be seen right in the riverbeds. This beauty also grows in damp meadows and other well-watered places. And in the mountains, Veronica Key is capable of reaching an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level, right up to the subalpine belt itself. This perennial is very willingly used to decorate the coastal areas of reservoirs, and not in vain - its delicate flowers give the area a special charm
Getting to know the plant
Veronica key is a luxurious representative of the Podorozhnikov family. Its rhizomes are creeping, rather thick and easily rooted, and the height of slender indistinctly tetrahedral or cylindrical hollow stems reaches an average of 10 - 80 cm. Stems reaching a length of one and a half meter are less common. All stems are straight, slightly ascending at their bases, simple or slightly branching, sometimes slightly glandular pubescent at the top.
Veronica's leaves are sessile and opposite. And the lower leaves often sit on very short petioles. The width of the leaflets is in the range from 0.5 to 4 cm, and the length is from 2 to 10 cm. They can be oblong-lanceolate, ovate or lanceolate-linear (most often). The bases of the leaves of this perennial can sometimes grow together. As a rule, the leaves of Veronica key are shiny, slightly serrated, serrate-toothed or whole-edged, slightly obtuse or very shortly pointed and equipped with veins (from one to three).
From the axils of the upper leaves emerge the most beautiful multi-flowered brushes of this beauty. As a rule, they are longer than leaves and form paniculate inflorescences. The flowers of Veronica key are located on pedicels that are bent to the axes of beautiful inflorescences at an acute angle. They are usually slightly longer than the filamentous linear bracts and can sometimes be hairy. And the color of the flowers can vary from whitish to pale blue. This amazing plant blooms from May to September.
The fruits of Veronica key are glandular or bare bolls, which can be either elliptical or rounded. Their width is almost equal to the length or even exceeds it. All fruits are uncompressed on the sides, slightly pointed and equipped with bizarre notches at the tops. Fruit size ranges from 2 to 4 mm. And the length of the oval seeds is 0.25 - 0.5 mm. Their surfaces are flat-convex, biconvex, or fine-meshed. Ripening of fruits of Veronica key is observed from July to October.
Using veronica key
This plant has found application in folk medicine. For medicinal purposes, the herb of this perennial (flowers, leaves and stems) harvested during the flowering period is used. Veronica Key helps to cope with neuroses and cardiosclerosis, and is also an excellent helper in postpartum inflammatory processes. And its fresh leaves are eaten as watercress.
How to grow
Best of all, this delicate beauty will grow on swampy or damp shores. However, in shallow waters, she will also feel great. Well-lit areas are an excellent choice for growing this plant. Veronica key is planted in the ground, usually in containers, while the planting depth should be up to 10 cm. As for the soil, in principle, any soil is suitable for the full development of this green pet, but it is still better to give preference to nutritious ones. And the reproduction of this moisture-loving beauty occurs by cuttings.
In general, Veronica Key is quite unpretentious in care and has good winter hardiness. But the fruits of this plant are often affected by weevils, as a result of which spherical galls, which strongly change the shape of these very fruits, begin to form on them.
