There are times when the harvested onion crop is almost the same size as the seed - seed. Why does this happen and how to avoid such a failure on your site? What should a gardener pay attention to in winter so that next season he does not cry from the quality of the selected onion?
Onions do not like hot winters and cold summers
You can contrive to spoil the crop even before the seed hits the beds. To do this, it is enough to provide the planting material with improper storage conditions. Sevok should not be stored in the cold. The optimum temperature for onions during the winter is + 12 … + 18? С. You can keep a basket with sets in a room. But it is necessary to understand that both cold and heat are dangerous for him. From this, the onion will either go to the arrow and will not grow, or it will dry out.
However, even under ideal storage conditions, the bow is not protected from slipping into the arrow. This happens when you plant too early and if the cold comes. And also with the vagaries of nature, when frosts occur in summer and even snow falls. In such a case, you need to keep close at hand a shelter that will protect the landing. Otherwise, the harvest will not please the owner.
How to choose and prepare a set for planting
To achieve a good harvest, you need to take a responsible approach to the selection of seedlings. It should be tight and of a good size. It is undesirable to use sprouted specimens for planting.
If you use a purchased set, it is recommended to let it rest at a favorable temperature for two weeks. And the day before landing at night, warm it up near the stove or on the battery. Another tip for preparing a set is to keep it in warm water for a couple of hours. A growth stimulant can also be added here. After that, it is not superfluous to pickle in a solution of potassium permanganate and rinse with clean water.
Why does a good crop yield a bad harvest?
Even the best planting material cannot produce an excellent yield if the soil is not suitable for the onions in your area. In particular, seedlings will grow poorly on clayey soils; such soils must be loosened. But light sandy soils are not the best option due to the fact that they will not have enough nutrients and will need to be fertilized.
The best option for pre-planting land cultivation in the garden will be sowing green manure twice a year. Therefore, it is advisable not to forget about this in early spring - before the sevok is planted. This is a great way to loosen the soil and fertilize the soil at the same time. The second time the green manure is returned to the plots in the fall.
In addition to green manure, it is possible to loosen clay soils with sawdust treated with nitrogen fertilizers. It is not recommended to apply dry fresh shavings to the soil, as it has the property of "pulling" nitrogen out of the ground.
Also, to improve the quality of the soil, they use rotted manure or straw, which served as bedding for the horse. Experienced gardeners note that cow dung often attracts a bear, and pork is often infected with parasites. But horse manure is the best choice for such purposes. However, fresh should not be used. Such a "seasoning" for the soil under the onion leads to the fact that its keeping quality decreases, the bulb ripens for a long time and the neck remains thick. And when the neck does not dry out to the right extent, it remains vulnerable to the penetration of diseases and crop rotting into the bulb.
Sand is often used to loosen clay soil. In this case, it must be understood that the effect of such loosening will not be constant. Over time, the sand will sink under the clay and the soil will harden again. Therefore, if possible, it is desirable to use other materials. And the best choice would be those that not only loosen up the mechanical structure, but also increase the fertility of the earth.
