The time is not far off when vegetables from their sunny beds move to dark storage facilities. And it's time to remember how to prepare the harvest for storage. Namely - what to do so that the onions and garlic do not disappear
Why decorate onions with "chrysanthemum"
Many people are familiar with such a problem as rotting young onions. And this often happens not only due to unfavorable weather during the growing season, but also for other reasons:
• improper care;
• unsuitable soil;
• cleaning during the rainy season;
• premature laying in a vegetable store.
Now it is too late to correct planting errors, but it is worth taking care of cleaning at the optimal time and preparation for storage.
First of all, you need to stop watering the beds with onions in time. In addition, harvesting onions is also not recommended in rainy weather. It is important that the weather is dry.
After harvesting, the crop must be dried. It is not recommended to cut off the feather right away. Onions should be placed to dry in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place. It is advisable that the bulbs do not come into contact with each other in barrels.
The feather is cut off after the onion neck is dry enough. The pruning is done at a height of 3-4 cm. And then the neck needs to be cut with scissors into several parts and a little "grind", ruffling with "chrysanthemum". Thanks to this technique, excess moisture will come out from the upper part of the turnip, the onion will dry out well and will not rot during storage. It is also desirable to shorten the lobe.
Garlic can be dried in bunches
Garlic is also watered less before digging. The fact that the garlic is ripe will be indicated by such external signs as dry greens, drooping arrows and cracking covers on arrows with bulbs.
For a sample, you can dig out one garlic from the garden and look at the covering scales of the onion. They should start to exfoliate. If the bulbs begin to crumble in the hand, then you should not pull with harvesting, because the crop is already beginning to overripe, and it will be stored worse.
You need to dig out carefully, use a shovel, and not pull out the plants by the arrows. Carefully clean the heads from the adhering earth with your hands. Better yet, let the earth dry, and then carefully remove it.
After harvesting from the garden, the garlic needs to be dried. It is convenient to do this by collecting the plants in bunches of 10-15 pieces and tying them, rewinding the stems with a string. In this form, they can be hung in the room with the bulb down.
You should also not trim the garlic right away. The stems must be allowed to dry. They should become completely dry and change from green to yellow-brown. After that, you can trim the leaves without fear that an infection will penetrate the bulb through the cut.
In this case, you must not cut the stems too close to the head - leave the petiole about 7-10 cm long so as not to accidentally damage the cloves. You can also get rid of dry roots by carefully cutting with scissors, and burn the cut with matches.
How to store garlic: in boxes, in braids and in oil
It is undesirable to store garlic in plastic bags because it will start to rot. Better to put the crop in boxes or baskets. You can also knit braids from them and store them hanging near the wall. But in this case, of course, you do not need to cut the stems.
It is necessary to lay garlic for long-term storage only after a thorough examination of the heads. Damaged bulbs with signs of rotting or other diseases should be immediately recycled if they are still suitable for food. When there are many such bulbs, "oil preservation" of garlic will help out. To do this, the cloves must be completely cleaned, folded into a jar and filled with sunflower oil. In this form, garlic can be stored in the refrigerator for longer than if it was just lying and covered with yellow and brown spots.
