The one who truly mesmerizes the look and wants to look at them endlessly is Pansies. Such unique and always fabulously beautiful, they seem to look into the soul, bring peace and admiration at the same time. This is the most beloved flower for all gardeners, without exception
Thanks to the work of breeders, from a once nondescript plant with pure purple and yellow small inflorescences, the viola has turned into a gorgeous flower. It amazes with fireworks of various shades and the most incredible combinations. Even on one plant, it is difficult to find two completely identical inflorescences.
A bit of history
Initially, viola (violet), as this plant is correctly called according to Linnaeus's classification, was an inconspicuous field flower. It did not differ in great variety and size. But each nation added its own legends about its origin.
In Germany, it was believed that his stepmother turned into him with her daughters for the bad attitude towards her stepdaughter. The lower one, the most extravagant and beautiful petal, was presented in the form of an unkind woman, the two extreme ones after him, painted with bright colors, were his own daughters. And the 2 upper petals, the palest and faded, are modestly dressed stepdaughters.
Another legend tells of the goddess Venus bathing in a secluded lake. Noticing that ordinary people were watching her, she asked Zeus to punish the impudent ones. He took pity on mortals, turning them into flowers with surprised faces.
For Christians, pansies had the symbol of the Holy Trinity. The black triangle in the middle of the inflorescence was represented by the all-seeing eye of the Divine Father.
In Russia, there was a legend about a girl in love, Anyuta. She was separated from her fiancé, who was forced to marry another. On the day of the wedding, Anyuta died of grief. Wonderful flowers have grown in this place.
It is noteworthy that at all times, pansies were considered the flower of lovers. It was presented on Valentine's Day and other holidays to very close people.
How did the transformation of this beautiful flower take place?
Viola breeding began in the 16th century thanks to Prince Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel. He introduced wild specimens into horticultural culture. I began to collect seeds and select the best ones. In the 17th century, the gardener of the Prince of Orange introduced the world to 5 varieties of this plant.
In England, Lady Mary Benet, a big fan of viola, gave all the space of the garden to the most successful specimens of this flower. To please the hostess, the gardener collected seeds, leaving bushes with large inflorescences of unusual colors. Pollination insects contributed to their further improvement.
This is how the most beautiful colors with large "eyes" began to appear.
Modern varieties
In recent years, genetics has made great strides forward. Thanks to scientific research, varieties and hybrids have appeared that have not only beautiful shades, but also compact bushes that are resistant to freezing and adverse weather conditions.
Violet Vitrokka is the most beautiful, largest specimen. Its only drawback: in the heat, the inflorescences become smaller, and with prolonged rains, it suffers from root rot. The most resistant to these factors are foreign-bred hybrids of the Bingo, Super Majestis Giants, Cello series.
Crossing Vitrokka violets with horned violets gives compact bushes with an abundance of inflorescences, but smaller. The most beautiful option is the Ultima Radiance Deep Blue series with pretty eyelashes on a white-yellow background and purple edging around the edges of the petals.
Breeding is underway to create varieties with a wavy edge and double inflorescences (mixtures of Rococo, Shalun, Kan Kan).
It is not surprising that many poets dedicated their poems to them.
Anna Akhmatova wrote her works about flowers. She did not ignore the pansies with her attention:
And a flock of pansies
Velvety keeps the silhouette -
These are butterflies flying away
They were left with their portrait."
And here is a wonderful essay on the same topic by Vladimir Nabokov:
“Pansies, funny eyes, into the gloomy haze of our deserts
you rarely look from an affectionate fairy tale, from the world of forgotten shrines …
Pansies … vaguely curls
soft pattern on black velvet, purple and yellow, and laughs meekly
flowers chaste gaze …
We lost our way to a pure star
we suffered a lot, the bags are empty, we are very tired … Tell God, tell me about it, flowers!
Will we forgive suffering, will we find a star?
Pansies, pray for us
may all people, their feelings and thoughts, are a bit like you!"
Looking at these beautiful flowers, I got this poem:
Ah, those gentle "eyes"!
There are so many charms and colors in them, Which makes me want to say:
"Only with you every day is beautiful!"
And this is only a small part of the many declarations of love for this mysterious flower.
